WASHINGTON - The No. 24 Georgetown University men's soccer squad (0-4-0) had another late goal seal their fate as the squad fell, 1-0, to the Virginia Tech Hokies (4-0-0) on Monday afternoon at Shaw Field in the team's home opener. The Hoyas controlled much of the possession, but couldn't get the ball in the net.
"We just need to score," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. "Today we created more than enough chances to get goals and we didn't finish."
The Hoyas dominated the pace early, looking the most aggressive they have all season. Opportunities were coming from out wide creating space in the middle of the field. The first significant chance came in the 20th minute when freshman forward Achara (Enugu, Nigeria/Berkshire School [Mass.]) dribbled to the endline and sent it back to a crashing Brett Campbell (Wallingford, Pa./The Haverford School) whose touch was saved by VT keeper Ben Lundgaard.
In the 21st minute, the short corner resulted in a balling going into the box and Achara getting a head on it once again forcing Lundgaard to come up with the stop.
Virginia Tech never looked dangerous as GU began to press. In the 31st minute, Achara sent it to senior midfielder Bakie Goodman (Sarasota, Fla./Pine View School for the Gifted) whose shot from close range resulted in a Lundgaard kick save as the Blue & Gray searched for the first goal of the match.
The Hoyas dominated the first half on offense, but couldn't find the back of the net as the squads went into the break scoreless. Georgetown outshot Virginia Tech, 5-3, in the first half and took three corners to the Hokies two.
Virginia Tech came out fired up in the second half with some good possession and forcing sophomore goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) to make his first significant save of the match.
In the 54th minute, junior midfielder Arun Basuljevic (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) got a clean look at the goal from 18 yards out but his shot was stopped.
The game began to get physical with hard challenges by both squads. A Hokie yellow card gave Campbell a golden opportunity that was blocked and then stopped by Lundgaard before it was able to trickle into the goal.
On the other end, Marcinkowski laid out to stop a shot from distance to the near post. On the counter, Achara managed a chest pass to himself getting ahead of the defense for a 1v1, but Lundgaard notched the save once again.
Basuljevic began feeling it as freshman forward Davey Mason (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) was ahead of the defense on the left side and sent it back to a wide open Basuljevic whose shot went just over the crossbar.
One of VT's best looks came in the 81st minute as Ryan Marcano came streaking down the left side with one defender on him. He shot it through the legs of the defender but it went just over the crossbar.
The difference came with six minutes remaining as a result of the restart. The ball went into the far corner, and Juan Pablo Saavedra looped the ball across the face of the goal. Collin Verfurth leaped and volleyed the ball into the net to score the goal and make it 1-0 in favor of the Hokies.
The Hoyas would be unable to find the equalizer eventually falling, 1-0.
Georgetown outshot Virginia Tech, 14-10, and took seven corners to the Hokies' six. Marcinkowski took the loss with five saves, while Lundgaard tallied six.
