INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (12-7, 4-5 BIG EAST) fought off a pesky Butler University (5-15, 2-7 BIG EAST) squad for a 58-52 win on Sunday afternoon at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. Sophomore guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) led the way for the Hoyas with a career-high 29 points and eight rebounds.
"Today was a great road win, and a great way to finish this two-game road swing," said Georgetown Head Coach Natasha Adair. "This time of year every league game, regardless of record, is going to come down to the wire. Our team responded, got some key stops, we made some big shots and Dionna White just put this team on her back to get the win."
Two Hoyas scored in double figures as White's 29 points, eight boards and five steals led the squad. Senior forward Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds.
The Hoyas and Bulldogs had 35 rebounds apiece, but GU had 12 on the offensive glass. GU shot 34.9 percent (22-of-63) from the field, and allowed Butler 41.2 percent (21-of-51) shooting. The defense forced 24 BU turnovers on 14 steals, and also had five blocked shots.
The game started slow as both teams turned it over early. Midway through the first, a Butler 3-pointer put the Bulldogs up, 7-4, and forced a timeout as the squads seemed a step slow in the first few minutes.
The Hoyas regrouped and went back to their up-tempo pace getting out on the break off of defensive rebounds. However, the shots kept falling from long range for the Bulldogs as Butler took the 12-6 lead. In the closing minute, a putback from Olivia Ramil (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton) and a steal with a layup from White made it 12-10 at the end of the first quarter.
White was just heating up, hitting a 3-pointer on the first possession of the second quarter. Moments later, Woodard and senior guard Mykia Jones (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook/Wake Forest) sank treys of their own as the Hoyas moved ahead, 19-12.
The Blue & Gray clung to a small lead as the defense did its job, but the shots weren't falling. A late play by White made it 28-21 in favor of the Hoyas going into the half.
Georgetown managed to hold on through much of the third, but a 7-0 Bulldog run gave Butler back the lead, 38-36, as the Hoyas went cold and were forced to call timeout. In the final minute, White tied it on a jumper at the top of the key. However, a free throw gave Butler the 39-38 advantage going into the final stanza of the game.
Butler led early in the fourth and went ahead by as much as three. As the defense came up with stops, White staged a 5-0 run to give the Hoyas the 46-44 advantage. The Bulldogs answered with a contested trey to regain the lead as it would go back and forth down the stretch.
In the final two minutes, the Hoyas came together to get it done. White got a big offensive rebound which resulted in a jumper by junior forward Cynthia Petke (Yaounde, Cameroon/-/Chipola). This was followed by a DiDi Burton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College) steal and a layup from Woodard to put the Blue & Gray ahead by six. The Bulldogs were forced to foul and White knocked down some free throws in the last minute to make it 58-52 as GU picked up the victory.
The game included a milestone as junior guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) pulled down her 500th rebound. Both Adomako and Woodard have now hit 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds this season. The last time two Hoyas hit these milestones in the same season was 2010-11 when Sugar Rodgers and Monica McNutt were both honored.
Georgetown will return home on Saturday, January 28 against Villanova University for a 1 p.m. tipoff at McDonough Arena. The game will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network and live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
