WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's tennis team (1-0) opened spring play with a big 7-0 victory over the Drexel University Dragons (3-1) on Friday afternoon at RiverWinds in West Deptford, N.J. The Hoyas won eight of the nine matches to begin 2017 on the right track.
Georgetown picked up the doubles point with two victories to begin the match. The pair of sophomore Sydney Goodson (Great Falls, Va./Langley High School) and junior Sara Swift (Vail, Colo./Saint Edward's School/Wake Forest University) downed their opponents, 6-2, at No.2. Additionally, the duo of junior Drew Spinosa (Claremont, Calif./Claremont/University of San Diego) and sophomore Cecilia Lynham (Chevy Chase, Md./Holton Arms School) won by a score of 6-2 at No. 3.
In singles play, the Hoyas swept to cruise to victory. Senior Victoire Saperstein (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School) took the win at No. 1 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory, and Swift won in a three-set battle at No. 2 over Ghita Benhandi by a score of 3-6, 7-5, 10-7.
Sophomore Risa Nakagawa (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) was victorious at No. 3 taking the match 6-1, 6-3, while Goodson won at No. 4 in a 6-1, 6-3 decision. Rounding out the final two matches were Lynham at No. 5 who won 6-3, 6-3, and Spinosa at No. 6 getting the 6-2, 7-6 (4) victory.
The Hoyas will be back in action on Sunday, February 5 for a match in Cambridge, Mass., facing the Harvard University Crimson at 10 a.m.
