OMAHA, Neb. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (8-6, 0-4 BIG EAST) lost an overtime heartbreaker to the Creighton University Bluejays (10-5, 4-1 BIG EAST), 70-68, in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at D.J. Sokol Arena on Sunday.
Three Hoyas scored in double figures as junior guard DiDi Burton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College Prep) led the way tying her career-best with 19 points and pulled down seven rebounds as well as tallying six assists. Junior guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) scored 18 points with a squad-best eight rebounds, while senior guard Mykia Jones (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) managed 10 points in her first career start.
Georgetown outrebounded Creighton, 46-41, and forced nine Bluejay turnovers on six steals while committing just nine giveaways. GU shot just 43.5 percent from the field (27-of-62), while allowing Creighton 34.8 percent shooting (23-of-66) as well as 11 3-pointers.
Creighton tied it at 50 to start the final stanza, but Burton hit one-of-two from the line and a fadeaway jumper to move ahead by three.
Jones converted a 3-pointer to make it a six-point game, but Creighton answered with a three-point play of its own. Jones continued to make a difference with a drive in the lane as the Hoyas led by five. Free throws would cut it to three as the clock moved under two minutes, but junior center Yazmine Belk (Queens, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) sank a free throw to force it into a two-possession game.
The defense got a stop, but a pair of missed free throws kept Creighton in it. The Bluejays hit one on the ensuing possession, and GU had a chance to put them away but both free throws rolled off the rim. Creighton took a timeout to advance the ball and ran a play for a trey from the corner where Lauren Works sank a 3-pointer to knot it at 59. Georgetown would get one last chance, but couldn't get a shot off to force overtime. Free throws made the difference as GU went 4-of-12 at the line in the fourth.
In overtime, Creighton would use the line to take a lead early going ahead by as much as five, 65-60. The Hoyas came roaring back as Burton drove to the basket and Adomako hit a pair of free throws. The Blujays answered, but a Belk layup cut it to one, 67-66, with 1:16 left on the clock.
The Hoyas came up with a huge stop and Burton penetrated the lane again drawing the foul with 19 seconds left to play. The junior hit both to give Georgetown the lead as Creighton called timeout to set up a final play. The play worked as Works hit another trey in the corner giving the Bluejays the 70-68 victory.
The Hoyas were active in the paint early, but perimeter defense hampered the efforts as Creighton hit three-consecutive treys to make it 12-8. On the fourth Bluejay 3-pointer, Adomako matched her to stop the momentum. A Woodard block on defense then turned into a layup on the other end to pull GU within one, 15-14. Adomako's jumper made it 16-15 as Georgetown regained the lead, but the game would continue to swing back and forth.
Over the final three minutes of the quarter, the defense held it down and Georgetown managed a 6-0 run with buckets from Burton, senior guard Tyshell King (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy) and Adomako to make it 22-17 in favor of the Blue & Gray at the end of the first.
The defense was the story of the second quarter as Georgetown came up with stops. On the other end, GU built the lead to 35-24, on an 11-0 run which included big plays from freshman guard Morgan Smith (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist) and a trey from Adomako. Creighton had one last answer in the half, as GU went into the break leading 35-28. Creighton opened the second half with a 5-0 run to pull within three and force a Hoya timeout. The quarter looked much like the first as GU went inside, the Bluejays hit from beyond the arc and the lead swung back and forth. A layup from Woodard at 4:31 made it 44-41 and gave the Blue & Gray some breathing room, but it would continue to be a battle.
A trey from the Bluejays tied it at 46 and Creighton looked to have momentum. However, the Hoya defense came up with three big stops, and a Burton layup coast-to-coast gave Georgetown the small 48-46 advantage at the end of the third.
This would set up the final quarter and overtime as Creighton managed to get past Georgetown. The Hoyas were without leading scorer sophomore Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) who was out with an illness.
