WASHINGTON - Georgetown University's volleyball team lost 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-21) on the road at Xavier in BIG EAST action on Friday night. The Hoyas fall to 7-16 overall and 1-10 in league play.
Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) led all players with 17 kills while hitting at a .483 clip and Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas/Dawson) added 12. Aima Eichie (Castle Rock, Colo./Rock Canyon/UC Davis) and Riley Wertzberger (Dallas, Texas/Richardson) both chipped in four.
Paige McKnight (Atlanta, Ga./Dunwoody) paced the offense with a match-high 30 assists and nearly posted a double-double with nine digs while Kenzie Higareda (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) hauled in 12 digs.
Xavier (9-17, 4-8 BIG EAST) took the early advantage in the opening set, leading 7-3 before the Hoyas rallied back to knot things up at 14-14 to force a Musketeers timeout. Coming out of the break, XU posted a 7-0 run to reclaim momentum before the Blue & Gray battled back to pull within four, down 22-18. Following Xavier's final timeout, the host Musketeers scored three of the final four points to win the set.
Georgetown recorded more kills in the second and third frames than XU, and outhit its host in the third. A pair of early ties in the second stanza gave way to the Musketeers using runs of 8-3 and 6-2 to claim the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third, Xavier led 11-3 before the Hoyas battled back to pull within a pair, down 17-15, and burn both of XU's timeouts. The Musketeers then put the match away by scoring six of the next nine points and holding GU off down the stretch.
Lauren Frilling led Xavier with eight kills while Meredith Klare had 13 digs. Georgetown returns to action on Sunday as it closes out the Midwest swing at Butler at 2 p.m.
