Brunson Wins Fifth WNBA Title

Oct. 5, 2017

WASHINGTON - Former Georgetown University women’s basketball standout Rebekkah Brunson set a WNBA record Wednesday evening becoming the first played in league history to win five WNBA Championships. Brunson and the Minnesota Lynx defeated the Los Angeles Sparks, 85-76, to win the 2017 championship in five games.

“It feels good. I think it feels better because I get to share it with this amazing team,” Brunson said Wednesday night. “These amazing players, this amazing coaching staff, this amazing organization. Everybody here deserves everything that we get.”

Brunson won her first title in 2005 with the Sacramento Monarchs. Since arriving in Minnesota in 2010, she has helped the Lynx to four titles in seven years.

“I always have said that I’ve been blessed to be on two very, very special teams with how we care about each other and how we care about each other,” Brunson said. “Just to win the title here in front of the fans is amazing, not matter what it is. The fifth for me, one for some. This group and these fans, they are always here for us along the way. The ups and the downs, they always support us.

“I’ve been blessed throughout my career. I’ve been on some hard-working teams that know what it takes to compete and be successful. Being able to play with Cheryl (Reeve), one the best basketball minds there is, it’s just been a blessing.”

During the playoffs, Brunson averaged 9.5 ppg as well as 6.0 rpg. Her double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds in Game 4 helped force the decisive Game 5 where she chipped in 13 points and eight rebounds.

Brunson was Georgetown's first women's basketball All-American and was also the second WNBA draft pick in program history, picked 10th overall in the 2004 draft by the Sacramento Monarchs. At Georgetown, Brunson became the program's leading rebounder (1,093) and held the record for rebounds in a season with 336 in 2004 until 2014. She was a four-time All-BIG EAST honoree and the 2004 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year.

In her professional career, Brunson has played with teams in Spain, Italy, Russia and Belgium. She has been a two-time EuroLeague All-Star, and won the 2007 FIBA Women's EuroCup.

Brunson was a part of the United States National Team pool and won a gold medal with the U.S. squad in the FIBA Americas Tournament, which qualified the squad for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She also won a silver medal with the national team at the 2003 USA Pan American Games.

In the WNBA, she won a league championship in 2005 with the Monarchs as well as four with the Lynx. Additionally, she has now been a four-time All-Star and named Second Team All-Defense on five occasions, including this season, along with a nod to the first team in 2011. With the Lynx, Brunson holds every rebounding record in the organization's history and holds the WNBA record for career rebounds.

Brunson supports The 32 Foundation, which she started to help at-risk teens in the Washington, D.C., area stay out of trouble and overcome obstacles in a place that could limit their growth or achievement.

“We’re successful because it’s just not all about basketball,” Brunson said. “Of course, we are great players and we put some great work on the court, but I think we are successful because we want to win for each other. It’s not a selfish effort. We want to win for the person that is next to us and they are winning for the person next to them.”
