Oct. 7, 2017 WASHINGTON - Georgetown University's men's golf team hits the road this weekend to take part in the Fighting Irish Classic, hosted by Notre Dame on October 8-9. The 54-hole tournament will take place at the par-71, 7,020-yard Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind.
Georgetown is coming off a fourth-place showing at the Patriot Intercollegiate, hosted by George Mason. The Hoyas stormed back after finishing the opening 36 holes in seventh place, firing a 292 in the final round to leapfrog Elon, Bethune-Cookman and the host Patriots into fourth place. Two Hoyas finished in the top 10, led by senior Sam Madsen (Madison, Wis./Cardinal Gibbons [Fla.]) tied for third with a 1-under par 215 and sophomore Eduardo Blochtein (Delray Beach, Fla./Spanish River) carding a 2-over par 218 to tie for 10th overall.
The Hoyas will send senior co-captains Madsen, Cole Berman (Philadelphia, Pa./The Haverford School) and Jack Musgrave (Chesterton, Ind./Andrean) along with Blochtein and Patrick DiPasquale (Rochester, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) to the Hoosier State. Madsen paces the Blue & Gray with a 72.16 stroke average after six rounds, followed by Blochtein with a 72.66 average after three. Berman and Musgrave have matching 75 stroke averages while DiPasquale is making his collegiate debut.
The Hoyas are one of 13 teams participating in the event and one of just five programs making a repeat trip in South Bend, Ind., from a year ago. Other participants in the field are Dayton, DePaul, Drake, Fort Wayne, Georgia Southern, Oakland, Toledo, Utah State, Western Illinois, William & Mary, Xavier and the host Fighting Irish. Fort Wayne is the only other program the Hoyas have gone up against so far this season, with GU finishing 17 strokes ahead of the Mastodons at the season-opening Memphis Intercollegiate in September.
Following Saturday's practice round, Sunday's action will consist of 36 holes with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start. Georgetown will tee off from holes 8-11 against its counterparts from Dayton and Drake. Live scoring will be available throughout the day at www.golfstat.com.
Georgetown finished 13th at Notre Dame's Gridiron Golf Classic in 2016 with Berman leading the way with an even-par 210 to finish tied for sixth place.
Following the Midwest swing, the Hoyas return home to host the 33rd Annual Georgetown Intercollegiate from October 15-17 at The Four Streams Golf Club in Beallsville, Md.
