Friday's five set affair was the 10th of the season for the Blue & Gray. Providence (17-15, 6-11 BIG EAST) led early in the fifth, jumping to a 10-4 lead and forcing Georgetown to burn both its timeouts. The Hoyas rallied from there, slowly chipping away at the deficit to make it 12-6 in the truncated frame. Clamping down, the Friars went on to score three of the final six points win their second five-set match against GU this season.
Things started in Georgetown's favor as the Blue & Gray dominated the opening set. The Hoyas outhit PC, .458 to .167, and spread the offense around with six different players recording kills. Tied early at 7-7, GU used a 7-1 run to go ahead 14-8 and never looked back the rest of the way.
The script was flipped in the second as Georgetown couldn't find a rhythm and the Friars caught fire. Providence hit .355 in the frame and forced the Hoyas to hit negative en route to the 25-13 victory.
In the third, Georgetown led wire-to-wire behind the offense of Speech and Sinnette along with a group defensive effort. Sinnette tallied five kills in the stanza while Speech added four. Five different Hoyas recorded at least a pair of digs in the set, led by Higareda with five, and held the Friars to hitting a meager .029 clip.
In the fourth, a strong offensive performance by the Hoyas was overshadowed by the impressive hitting from Providence. The Friars outhit GU .432 to .302 in the frame and had two players with seven kills each. Trailing by as many as five points much of the set, Georgetown rallied back from a 16-11 deficit to knot things up at 21-21 on a Speech kill. Following three-straight points from the Friars, GU fended off a pair of set points before PC closed out the frame to force the deciding fifth set.
Addison Root led Providence with 18 kills while Allison Impellizeri added 15.
Georgetown returns to action on Saturday as it closes out the 2017 season against No. 13 Creighton. The finale will also serve as Senior Day for Meghan Richard (Firestone, Colo./Niwot/Seattle) and Eichie.
