Men's Soccer Holds Annual Banquet

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer team held its annual banquet on Monday to recognize the accomplishments of the 2017 squad. Head Coach Brian Wiese and his staff named the three major award winners and announced the recipient of the fourth-annual alumni award.

The Most Valuable Player Award was given to senior midfielder Christopher Lema (Ridgefield, N.J./St. Stephen's Episcopal School) for the second-consecutive year. It was presented by junior captain Brendan McDonough (Matthews, N.C./Charlotte Catholic). This is the third time in a row that a player has won multiple MVP awards with Joshua Yaro winning in 2014 and 2015, and Steve Neumann (B'13) winning in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Lema was a Second Team United Soccer Coaches All-American and a First Team All-Great Lakes Region selection. Additionally, he was also a First Team All-BIG EAST honoree for the second-consecutive year. Lema tallied two game winners and was the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 23. The senior captain has five goals and 12 assists for 22 points.

Senior midfielder Declan McCabe (Weston, Mass./The Rivers School) was named the Most Improved Player. The award was presented by junior captain JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle).

McCabe was a Second Team All-BIG EAST honoree this season. He appeared in 19 games with 16 starts and was GU's second-leading scorer with three goals and a BIG EAST best 10 assists for 16 points. All three of his goals were game winners including an overtime free kick to win the BIG EAST Championship. He was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 8.

The Ricardo Mendoza Award, given to the player who exhibits spirit, leadership and dedication, was awarded to Marcinkowski and presented by Lema.

Marcinkowski signed a Homegrown Player Contract with the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer (MLS) and will forgo his senior season. The goalkeeper played every minute in the net for the Hoyas this season and was a Second Team All-BIG EAST honoree as well as a Third Team All-Great Lakes Region selection. The two-year captain had a 0.72 GAA with 68 saves and eight shutouts on the season. He was the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week on three occasions and also earned three nods to the honor roll the year.

Wiese announced the winner of the 2017 Georgetown Soccer Alumni Award which was given to David Stapleton (C'95).

The Hoyas finished the season with a mark of 14-4-2. Georgetown claimed the 2017 BIG EAST Championship and earned an automatic NCAA Tournament berth. It marked the second championship in three years for the Blue & Gray as well as the second tournament championship in program history.
