Box Score

Omaha, Neb. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team suffered its first BIG EAST Conference loss of the season to the Creighton University Bluejays (8-4, 2-0 BIG EAST), 69-58, Saturday afternoon at D.J. Sokol Arena in Omaha, Nebraska. With the loss, the Hoyas move to 6-6 overall and 1-1 in league play.

Junior guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) led the way with 18 points and five rebounds. She was followed by senior guard Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) who tallied 17 points and a team-high six assists. Venson also managed her 1,000th career point in the contest. Senior center Yazmine Belk (Queens, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) rounded out those in double figures with 10 points and a squad-high 10 rebounds for the fourth double-double of her career and first of the season.

Both teams pulled down 29 rebounds in the contest, but the difference came in shooting as Creighton hit 56.0 percent (28-of-50) from the field, while Georgetown managed just 39.6 percent (21-of-53) shooting. On defense, the Hoyas forced 11 Bluejay turnovers while committing just nine. Audrey Faber led Creighton with 26 points as one of three in double figures.

The Hoyas jumped out to a seven-point lead, 13-6, fueled by five points from Venson and capped off with a trey from White. It was in that run that Venson hit the 3-pointer to score her 1,000th point. However, a 9-2 run for the Bluejays tied the game at 15 late in the first.

The Bluejays managed the first points of the second quarter, but the Hoyas had an answer for every bucket. The lead went back and forth with neither squad moving ahead by more than two throughout the stanza. With four minutes remaining in the half, a trey from White and a jumper from senior guard DiDi Burton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College Prep) made it a four-point game, 30-26.

Creighton found points in the paint, and cut it to two, 32-30, with 2:42 left in the half. Freshman Tatiana Thompson (Winter Haven, Fla./Winter Haven) entered the game and immediately drove the left side which was followed by a big trey from Venson giving the Hoyas the seven-point advantage. A true three-point from play White in the final minute was answered by a Creighton layup to give Georgetown the 40-34 lead at the break.

Minutes into the third quarter, the Bluejays managed a 7-0 run to regain the lead, 41-40. White ended the momentum with a layup, but it would continue to be a back-and-forth affair. Creighton was paced by Audrey Faber and Sydney Lamberty who combined for 14 points over the first 6:40 of the stanza.

The teams traded free throws late as GU would trail, 53-50, at the end of the third.

Georgetown wouldn't find a way back over the final quarter of play. Despite cutting the deficit to four, that would be as close as the Blue & Gray would come eventually falling, 69-58.

The Hoyas will host their BIG EAST home opener on Tuesday at McDonough Arena as the squad welcomes the Xavier University Musketeers to the District for a 2 p.m. tipoff. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network with Jeremy Huber and Monika Moore calling the action. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
