WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's tennis team battled through a five-hour match to pick up the 5-2 victory over Williams College, ranked No. 2 in the nation in Division III, Tuesday afternoon in Washington. With the win, Georgetown improves to 8-3 on the season as the squad moves into BIG EAST Conference play.
The Hoyas lost the doubles point early on as the pair of senior Margaret Psyhogeos (Wellesley, Mass./Noble and Greenough) and sophomore Sydney Goodson (Great Falls, Va./Langley High School ) were the lone victors. The pair won, 6-3, at the No. 2 slot.
In singles play, Georgetown bounced back as senior Victoire Saperstein (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School) won at No. 1 (6-0, 6-0), and junior Sara Swift (Vail, Colo./Saint Edward's School ) was victorious at No. 2 by a score of 6-2, 6-2. Williams came back to tie the match at two apiece, but the Blue & Gray would win the final three matches for the victory.
Sophomore Risa Nakagawa (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) took the point at No. 3 in a three-set battle 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Goodson was also strong, winning in both singles and doubles play. At No. 4, she played for three hours eventually winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Senior Sophie Barnard (Mill Neck, N.Y./Portledge School) lost the first set at No. 5, but came back to win 2-6, 7-5, 6-1.
"Sydney stepped up big time yesterday, winning doubles and a three-hour singles match. She continues to use her athletic ability coupled with competitiveness in tough matches," said Georgetown Head Coach Gordie Ernst. "Syd has amazing ability to keep her composure throughout the ups and downs of a match. Her opponent was as tough a fighter I've seen this year."
The Hoyas will open BIG EAST Conference play on Friday afternoon at St. John's University at noon.
