The Georgetown University women's golf team shot an 8-over par 296 and leads the 2017 BIG EAST Championship by seven shots after the first round of play on Friday at the Dogwood and Magnolia Courses in Callawassie Island, S.C.

The BIG EAST Championship continues on Saturday, April 22 with 18 holes and concludes on Sunday, April 23. The winner of the BIG EAST Championship will earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship.

Georgetown's score of 8-over par 296 is seven shots better than second-place St. John's (15-over par 303). Butler is in third place at 21-over par 309, followed by Seton Hall (27-over par 315), Xavier (28-over par 316) and Creighton (30-over par 318).

The Hoyas have four players among the top-10 overall, led by sophomore Alexa Popowitz (Boca Raton, Fla./St. Andrew's), who fired an even-par 72 and is in second place overall. She had a birdie on the first hole of the day and closed out the round with 16-straight pars.

Junior Lauren Gros (Windermere, Fla./Windermere Prep) is in fourth place at 2-over par. She had three birdies in the first round, including a pair on the front nine, where she fired a 1-under par.

Junior captain Jacquelyn Eleey (Quincy, Mass./Taft) and freshman Ashley Fitzgibbons (Sammamish, Wash./Sammamish) are tied for fifth place at 3-over par 75. Eleey had four birdies in the opening round and finished her final four holes with a pair, while Fitzgibbons had three birdies and 10 pars.

Sophomore Christina Parsells (Bernardsville, N.J./Kent Place), an All-BIG EAST First Team pick, is tied for 21st place at 9-over par 81. This is her first tournament action since March.
