May 27, 2017 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University sailing team is currently in third place at the 2017 ICSA LaserPerformance Team Race National Championship with a record of 10-3. The three-day regatta welcomes the 16 best collegiate teams across the nation to compete for the Walter C. Wood Trophy on the Cooper River in Charleston Harbor in Charleston, S.C.
"Today was hard, the conditions and the teams were tough," Sailing Head Coach Michael J. Callahan said. "We beat some good teams and lost to some good teams, but we feel good about where we are. We just want to be in the regatta and tomorrow we will focus on staying in the top eight.
"Tomorrow we will look to be consistent and make a game plan for the current, so that we can stay in the races. Our first race will be against Stanford, so it will be a tough one."
The format for this event is a series of round robins. In the first round robin, all 16 teams race each other once to determine places 9-16. The top eight teams then advance to a single round robin, to determine spots 5-8. The top four advance to a final four round robin to determine 1-4.
The Hoyas are one of three teams to boast double-digit wins thus far, joining the College of Charleston (11-2) and Yale (10-2).
Racing on Sunday begins at 10 a.m. The race committee aims to complete the first round and move into the next round of racing with the top eight teams.
