May 4, 2017 WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team held its annual banquet on Thursday evening in Nolan Hall at the Thompson Center. The event included players, coaches, staff, parents and donors as the accomplishments of the 2016-17 squad were recognized.
Following dinner, Head Coach Natasha Adair gave her remarks and announced the team award winners. Senior forward Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) won the Academic Award for her efforts in the classroom. The English major had one of the highest GPA's on the squad and also had an internship at USA Today this year as she prepares for life away from the Hilltop.
Junior guard DiDi Burton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College Prep) earned the Iron Hoya Award for her dedication and effort in the weight room. Burton also won the Swish n Dish Award as the team's assist leader with 103 on the season.
Sophomore guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) earned the Defensive Player of the Year Award. White posted a team-high 97 steals which led the BIG EAST Conference and ranked seventh in the nation with 3.3 spg. Later in the evening, White was awarded the Sharp Shooter Award as she averaged a squad-high 15.2 ppg on the season. Finally, White was given the team's Hustle Award for her efforts throughout the season on both ends of the court.
The Most Improved Award went to junior forward Cynthia Petke (Yaounde, Cameroon/-/Chipola) as she worked her way into the starting lineup. Petke also earned the Chairwoman of the Boards Award for her efforts down low averaging 6.5 rpg as well as 86 on the offensive glass.
Junior guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) earned the Chief of the Charity Stripe Award boasting the best free throw percentage on the squad hitting 77.9 percent from the line.
New this season was the Spirit Stick which was given to freshman Marvellous Osagie-Erese (East Orange, N.J./East Orange STEM Academy). The guard was a walk-on at the beginning of the season and pushed her teammates both in practice and in games. She will take on the responsibility of training the incoming players on work ethic and enthusiasm on the sidelines.
Varsity letters were then awarded before the playing of the season highlight video and speeches from the seniors. The event closed out with a thank you from Adair and a video thanking those in attendance for all of their support this past season.
