WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer squad (2-0) downed the No. 19 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (0-2) Monday afternoon at Shaw Field. The Blue & Gray maintained momentum throughout the game and managed to hang on for the team's second shutout of the season.

"Today's scoreline was deceptive because that was a hard game, Coastal Carolina is an NCAA Tournament team this year," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. "Two games and two shutouts is exactly what you want."

The Hoyas got on the board in the 16th minute as a take down in the box resulted in a penalty kick goal from senior captain Christopher Lema (Ridgefield, N.J./Ridgefield Memorial) who banged it in off of the crossbar to make it 1-0. The Chanticleers answered with momentum and one solid chance that went high, but the GU defense stood strong.

The Blue & Gray continued to pressure and in the 42nd minute, it paid off. Lema served in a corner kick that came back to him. On the second ball, he slid it through the box and traffic to the far post finding junior defender Peter Schropp (Omaha, Neb./Creighton Prep) who sent it in to make it 2-0. That score would stand at the half.

Coastal opened the second with an early look, but the most dangerous play in the first five minutes came as Achara (Enugu, Nigeria/Berkshire School [Mass.]) went high for a header in a 1v1 and Coastal keeper Braulio Linares-Ortiz stopped it with his glove to keep it a two-goal game.

Just minutes later, the teams traded chances as Linares-Ortiz stopped another Achara 1v1 with his glove. On the counter, Frantzdy Pierrot knocked an open shot off of the crossbar.

The dagger came in the 80th minute when Achara and freshman midfielder Jacob Montes (Lake Worth, Fla./Beaverton [Ore.]) came running down the field on a 2v2. Montes managed a no-look pass to Achara on his right who finished into the far corner to make it 3-0 and not allow a comeback for the Chants.

The Hoyas outshot Coastal Carolina, 18-10, and took seven corner kicks while the Chants attempted eight. In the net, Linares-Ortiz took the loss with six saves in the contest, while junior goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) stopped two shots on the afternoon.

"We finished pretty well today, the execution in front of the goal was better than last game so that was nice. A lot of positives to take out of it, that's a good win for us," said Wiese.

The Hoyas will continue their three-game homestand on Friday as the squad hosts Cal Poly at Shaw Field at 4 p.m. Live stats will be available on www.GUHoyas.com and a webcast featuring Dan Helfrich will be available on HoyasLive on FOX Sports Go.
