Women's Tennis Plays at Bedford Cup

Sept. 17, 2017

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's tennis team competed at the Bedford Cup Mid-Atlantic Tennis Championships at JTCC in College Park, Md., this past weekend. Senior Sara Swift (Vail, Colo./Saint Edward's School) was the highlight winning the singles backdraw defeating teammate Drew Spinosa (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) 6-4, 6-1.

In the main draw, junior Sydney Goodson (Great Falls, Va./Langley High School) had the top showing for the Blue & Gray advancing to the round of 16. She defeated Sloan Barton 6-1, 6-1 in the opening round. Goodson then took down an opponent from Towson by a score of 6-1, 7-6(5), 10-3.

In doubles play, Swift and Spinosa teamed up to win matches against squads from Delaware (6-0) and George Washington (6-3) before falling in the quarterfinal.

The Bedford Cup started in 2011 thanks to charitable donations from the Edward T. Bedford Foundation and previously featured the top collegiate men's and women's tennis players from all 11 NCAA Division I tennis programs in the state of Florida. Last year the tournament expanded outside the Sunshine State with the singles and doubles draws in Maryland to be contested by Division I schools from the Mid-Atlantic region.

The event featured 30 players in singles actions and 15 doubles teams drawn from six Mid-Atlantic Division I programs.

The Hoyas will be back in action on Wednesday as the squad hosts the University of the District of Columbia at 2 p.m.
