WASHINGTON - Georgetown University's volleyball team won its second tournament title of the young season as GU's perfect 3-0 record over the weekend clinched the Service Academy Challenge. The Hoyas defeated Columbia, 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-17), in the first match and solidified the tournament title with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-17) win over Army West Point in the finale. The Hoyas did not drop a set over the two-day tournament to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Match 1: Georgetown 3, Columbia 0
Against the Lions, the Blue & Gray had good contributions from the entire team with junior Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas/Dawson) leading the team in kills as she and classmate Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) were the lone Hoyas with double-digit kills.
With good energy through the entirety of the match, Georgetown relied on great production from the middle to clinch the three-set victory over Columbia.
"We are playing good volleyball and coming together as a team," Head Coach Arlisa Williams said after the Columbia match. "It is exciting to see us learn from and build on each performance. Yesterday we had a lull in the middle of the sets. Today, we battled for every one and kept playing as a gritty unit.
Match 2: Georgetown 3, Army West Point 0
The finale saw the Hoyas look to Sinnette and freshman Riley Wertzberger (Dallas, Texas/Richardson) in the kill column. Speech's presence was in the blocks column as she led the squad, followed by Sinnette.
"We stepped up our game from this morning," Williams said after the tournament. "Our blocking improved and we made adjustments quickly. I am very proud of the players and their effort, unity and commitment to their goals.
Georgetown returns to the friendly confines of McDonough Arena next weekend as it hosts the annual Georgetown Classic from Sept. 8-9. The Blue & Gray will welcome James Madison, Coppin State and Buffalo to the Hilltop for the event.
