WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer team hung on for a 1-0 victory over the No. 15 UCLA Bruins (1-2-0) Monday afternoon at Shaw Field. The win improved the Hoyas to 4-0 on the season and marked their third shutout of the year. It was also GU's second victory over a ranked opponent on the season.
"UCLA is good and we knew there would be spells where we would have to defend, but we defended more than I would have liked," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese. "Having said that, we also created a ton of great chances that their goalie made some saves on or we didn't finish. It was a good learning experience for a lot of guys in a hard game, and good for the guys to find a way to win like that."
The lone goal of the game came from a pure hustle play from sophomore forward Achara (Enugu, Nigeria/Berkshire School [Mass.]) in the 12th minute. He came up and pressured UCLA keeper Kevin Silva forcing a turnover in front of the goal. Achara tracked the ball down on the left endline and fired to the far post knocking it in with a textbook finish to make it 1-0. It marked his team-best fifth goal of the young season.
The Hoyas would keep pressuring, controlling the pace and momentum of the game throughout the first half. The Bruins, who played in an overtime game on Friday evening, were pinned back as GU outshot UCLA 8-4 in the first as well as not allowing any Bruin shots on goal in the first half.
Despite the advantage, GU could not find another goal before the break as the Blue & Gray went into the half leading 1-0.
Both teams were recharged after the break as each had dangerous looks at the net. Achara forced Silva to make two big saves, and on the other end, a golden UCLA header went just left. In the first half, Georgetown controlled the pace of the game. As the second half began, the defense was forced to thwart long stretches of pressure as the Bruins searched for the equalizer.
Junior goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) and the Hoya defense kept battling through the pressure as the Georgetown coaching staff brought in fresh legs to spell the defenders.
The offense would not get the insurance goal, but the Hoya defense did its job and overcame the pressure to hold on for the 1-0 victory and GU's third shutout of the season.
Georgetown outshot UCLA, 15-9, including an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Hoyas were awarded five corner kicks, while the Bruins took four. In the net, Marcinkowski had one save in the contest as well as the win, while Silva took the loss with seven saves on the afternoon.
The victory concludes a three-game homestand for the Blue & Gray. Georgetown will travel to Storrs, Conn., on Saturday to battle the UConn Huskies at 7 p.m. Live stats and a webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
