WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's golf team opens the season this weekend, competing in the Rutgers Invitational, hosted by Rutgers University in New Jersey. The tournament will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9 and conclude on Sunday, Sept. 10.

Georgetown will be one of 11 teams competing, including host Rutgers, Albany, Delaware, Fairleigh Dickinson, Hofstra, Long Island, Sacred Heart, St. John's, Siena and Wagner.

This tournament marks the debut for the Hoyas under first-year head coach Kate Schanuel,

Georgetown had its best season in program history last year, winning the BIG EAST Championship and advancing to an NCAA Regional for the first time. The team set the school record for lowest round in program history, lowest 54-hole team score and ended the year with six of the top-10 all-time tournament scores. Rising junior Alexa Popowitz (Boca Raton, Fla./St. Andrew's) was named the BIG EAST Player of the Year, while Eleey and rising junior Christina Parsells (Bernardsville, N.J./Kent Place) earned All-BIG EAST honors.

The GU lineup this weekend will be led by senior Christine Schmitt (Pittsford, N.Y./Mercy), Parsells, Popowitz, senior Jacquelyn Eleey (Quincy, Mass./The Taft School) and senior Lauren Gros (Windermere, Fla./Windermere Prep).

Sophomores Kate Evanko (West Chester, Pa./Unionvile) and Ashley Fitzgibbons (Sammamish, Wash./Eastlake Senior) will be playing as individuals.

This will be Georgetown's second time playing in the Rutgers Invitational since 2002, when the Hoyas won their first tournament in program history.
