SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - A fourth-quarter comeback was not enough as the Georgetown University women's basketball team lost to the Seton Hall University Pirates (11-8, 3-5 BIG EAST), 70-65, in a BIG EAST Conference matchup on Sunday afternoon at Walsh Gymnasium. With the loss the Hoyas fall to 7-10 overall and 2-5 in league play.
Senior guard Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va./Yorktown/Virginia) led the way with a career-best 28 points. Junior guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) added 13 points and two steals. Senior forward Cynthia Petke (Yaounde, Cameroon/-/Chipola College) managed 12 points and a squad-best nine rebounds in the contest.
The Hoyas were outrebounded, 39-32, but forced Seton Hall into 21 turnovers while committing just 13. Georgetown shot 36.1 percent (22-of-61) from the field, and allowed 47.1 percent (24-of-51) shooting, including six 3-pointers, from the Pirates.
Turnovers plagued the Hoyas early as SHU jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead to force the Georgetown timeout. It was a track meet with both teams getting out in transition and tough play in the post. Seton Hall continued to push, going up by as much as 10,14-4, until a Venson trey cut the deficit to seven.
Late in the first the Hoyas went on a 6-0 run. Senior guard DiDi Burton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College Prep) stole the ball at midcourt and made the layup. This was followed by another steal from Burton and a pair of free throws with a second left in the quarter to pull the Hoyas within three, 16-13.
The run continued into the second quarter as a 5-2 advantage tied the game at 18, ending on a long Venson jumper. Seton Hall would regain the lead, but Georgetown continued to battle.
The Hoya defense held The Hall scoreless for almost four minutes, but struggled to move ahead in that time. Finally at 3:26, White pulled down a defensive rebound and drove through traffic. Her layup rimmed in and she got the and one to tie the game at 25. However, a late 7-0 run gave the Pirates the 34-27 lead going into the half.
The Pirates opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer, but the Blue & Gray answered with a 6-1 run capped off by a turn-around jumper on the baseline from Petke to make it 38-33. Just as the Hoyas had the momentum, SHU came down on and nailed a trey. Venson answered with a pair of free throws, but back-to-back 3-pointers allowed the Pirate to take the 12-point 47-35 lead.
Seton Hall would continue to hold the Hoyas as GU ended the third stanza trailing, 51-38.
Venson managed back-to-back 3-pointers hoping to mount a comeback, however, the defensive stops did not come. The fourth quarter was all Venson as she scored 10 points on her own to cut the lead to nine, 57-48, and force a SHU timeout. The Pirates scored out of the break, but Venson answered right back.
Down the stretch, the Hoyas battled as the press forced turnovers and a three-point play from Petke cut it to five, 65-60, with 1:20 remaining in regulation. White came up with the stop in the press and Venson was fouled on the 3-pointer and made all three making it 65-63 with 1:10 left.
Seton Hall hit a pair of free throws to move ahead, but Smith was fouled on GU's inbounds play and swished both shots to cut it to two with 27 seconds remaining and forcing a Pirate timeout. The Blue & Gray was forced to foul late, and SHU hit from the charity stripe making the final, 70-65.
Georgetown will return home next weekend as the team welcomes the Marquette University Golden Eagles for a 7 p.m. matchup at McDonough Arena. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network with Ben Gordon-Goldstein and Monika Moore calling the action. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
