Hoyas Place Sixth at Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's golf team turned in a three-round score of 42-over par 906 to finish in sixth place at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, hosted by the University of Washington. Playing at the par-72, 6,014-yard Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Washington, the Hoyas tied a season high with a 297 in Tuesday's first round, before carding rounds of 308 and 301 over the final 36 holes.
 
The host Huskies won their home tournament, finishing as the only team under par at -5, 859. Washington was 24 strokes ahead of second-place Oregon State (+19, 883) and Pepperdine (+27, 891), UC Davis (+28, 892) and Rutgers (+38, 902) rounded out the top five. Georgetown was just four strokes behind the Scarlet Knights and finished two shots ahead of seventh-place BYU (+44, 908).
 
The Hoyas, who improved their score by 15 strokes from last year's tournament on the same course, recorded 12 birdies in Wednesday's round to leapfrog both BYU and San Francisco over the final 18 holes.
 
Senior Alexa Popowitz (Boca Raton, Fla. / St. Andrew's) was GU's top scorer, finishing at 7-over par 223 to place in a tie for 15th. After turning in scores of 76 and 74 on Tuesday, Popowitz came back with a 1-over par 73 on Wednesday to climb seven spots in the rankings.
 
Junior Ashley Fitzgibbons (Sammamish, Wash. / Eastlake Senior), playing in her hometown, carded a career-best 2-under par 70 in Tuesday's first round. After a 79 in the second round, she bounced back with a 75, recording four birdies, over the final 18 holes. She finished in 18th place at 8-over par 224, joining Popowitz among the top 20.
 
Senior Christina Parsells (Bernardsville, N.J. / Kent Place) tied for 34th with a 14-over par 230, while sophomore Elizabeth Nguyen (Pinehurst, N.C. / Pinecrest) finished at 29-over par 245 to tie for 61st. Senior Pendleton Bogache (Myrtle Beach, S.C. / Episcopal [Va.]), whose score was not counted because of a discrepancy in the second round, fired a 1-over par 73 on Wednesday.
 
The Hoyas will return to the East Coast to close out the fall season at the Blue Hen Invitational, hosted by the University of Delaware, Oct. 20-21.
