Farrell Scores Golden Goal in No. 4 Georgetown’s Double Overtime Victory at Marquette

WASHINGTON – The No. 4 Georgetown women's soccer team remains perfect in BIG EAST Conference place after defeating the Marquette Golden Eagles, 2-1, in double overtime on Thursday evening at Valley Fields. Senior Caitlin Farrell (Wallingford, Conn. / Choate Rosemary Hall) scored the game-winning goal in the 102nd minute to advance the Hoyas to 14-0-2 overall and 7-0 in the BIG EAST, while the Golden Eagles fall to 3-11-2 overall and 1-5-1 in conference play.

"I really cannot say enough about the resilience and heart of this team," said head coach Dave Nolan. "We knew this would be a very tough game because Marquette had its season riding on this. We played really well and were probably a little unfortunate to go behind. Their goalkeeper was in great form and when we missed our penalty kick, it would have been so easy for our heads to drop. That was when Kyra just put the team on her shoulders and scored a great goal to tie it up. Going into overtime, the girls were determined to find a winner and incredibly, Caitlin continued her great form and netted the winner."

The game winner came in the second minute of double overtime as junior Meaghan Nally (Herndon, Va. / South Lakes) found Farrell at the top of the box. The senior fired the ball towards Marquette goalkeeper Maddy Henry, hitting the left post then bouncing into the net. Farrell has scored two golden goals throughout the past three matches and has scored the game-winning goal in all three of them.

Georgetown managed possession early as the Golden Eagles tried to find their rhythm. The Blue & Gray took 10 shots and four corners in the first half as the squad looked to open up the scoring before halftime. With three minutes left in the half, Marquette sought out to take the lead, but the Hoya defense shut the opportunity down and cleared the ball out of the box immediately. Senior Jenna Staudt (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) deflected a shot that was taken towards senior goalkeeper Arielle Schechtman (Del Mar, Calif. / La Jolla Country Day / UCLA) in order to keep it scoreless heading into the second half.

The Blue & Gray capitalized on every opportunity to put points up on the board, but could not get the ball past Henry. In the 60th minute, Farrell acted on a chance to score but Henry's dive stopped the ball from the Hoyas opening up the scoring. Immediately after, graduate student Kyra Carusa (San Diego, Calif. / Del Norte / Stanford) took a shot off of the rebound, but Henry blocked her attempt as well.

The Golden Eagles took the lead in the 62nd minute when Kylie Sprecher took a shot from the top of the box, which then bounced in the six-yard box and snuck under the crossbar, just above Schechtman's head. Georgetown had a chance to tie the score in the 66th minute when Carusa took a penalty kick, but a pressured Henry managed to register the save.

The Hoyas finally found the answer in the 72nd minute when Carusa tied the score, 1-1. The forward found herself double-teamed on the end line but battled through MU's defenders to set herself up for an unassisted goal to give GU its rhythm back. The goal marked Carusa's seventh of the season. Neither team would find the back of the net in the remaining minutes as they ended regulation tied at one to send the game into overtime.

Both squads battled to score the golden goal and in the final three minutes of the first overtime, Nally took a promising shot but Henry stepped up with the save. Shortly after, sophomore Kelly Ann Livingstone (Glen Ridge, N.J. / Glen Ridge) attempted to score the game winner but could not find the back of the net, leading the teams into double overtime.

Georgetown only needed two minutes to win its 13th-straight game, the longest winning streak in the country at the moment. In the 102nd minute, Nally set the pass up for Farrell to score the game winner. The goal marked Farrell's 15th of the season and the 10th-straight game that she has recorded a point.

The Hoyas outshot the Golden Eagles, 26-9, and took 11 corners to their two. Schechtman tallied two saves, while Henry took the loss with 10 saves.

"This all leads to Sunday's game versus Butler with a BIG EAST Regular Season Crown on the line," said Nolan. "The girls are excited for the opportunity."
