No. 4 Georgetown and Xavier Play to Scoreless Draw in Regular Season Finale

WASHINGTON – The No. 4 Georgetown women's soccer team shut out the Xavier Musketeers in a 0-0 scoreless draw Thursday evening at XU Soccer Complex in the regular season finale. With the tie, the Hoyas finish the regular season with a record of 15-0-3 overall and 8-0-1 in BIG EAST play, while the Musketeers close out the season 10-7-2 overall and 4-3-2 in the league.

"This was a very hard fought game on the road, playing a physically tough team in a challenging environment," said head coach Dave Nolan. "Credit to Xavier, they played with a strong intensity for 110 minutes and made it difficult for us. But I am very proud of the girls. We matched their fight and may have won in in the end, as I felt we definitely finished the stronger team. We have been on an incredible run and an unbeaten regular season is a fantastic achievement by our group. We get a week now to rest up and prepare for the BIG EAST Tournament and what lies beyond."

The Blue & Gray dominated possession immediately in the first half on both ends of the field as GU took four shots before Xavier even had an opportunity to score until the 19th minute when a shot by Samantha Dewey came close to taking the lead for the Musketeers. A minute later, junior Grace Nguyen (Lilburn, Ga. / Parview) had a chance to open up the scoring for the Hoyas on a free kick, but could not capitalize on the opportunity. Both teams found it difficult to set up scoring scenarios until the last 15 seconds of the first half when Georgetown attempted to take the lead before the next half, but unfortunately could not.

The second half was just as uneventful as neither team could find a dangerous chance to score. However, Nguyen found a way in the 76th minute as she fired away from the top of the box, but it soared just one inch above the crossbar. As neither team could find any more opportunities to find the back of the net, they were forced into overtime.

Senior goalkeeper Arielle Schechtman (Del Mar, Calif. / La Jolla Country Day / UCLA) faced three shots from XU in the first overtime and made incredible saves on all of them to keep the score 0-0. The Musketeers took a shot in the last second of overtime, but luckily for the Hoyas, it went wide and the teams faced another 10 minutes of overtime.

Georgetown had a promising opportunity to score its golden goal in the 106th minute when junior Sarah Trissel (San Diego, Calif. / Torrey Pines) blasted a shot from the top of the box, but it hit the crossbar. Junior Paula Germino-Watnick (Chevy Chase, Md. / Bethesda-Chevy Chase) followed up with a shot off of the rebound, which ended up flying over the net.

A pressured Schechtman managed to save Xavier's shots from going past her in the final few minutes, resulting in a scoreless draw.

Xavier outshot GU 13-9, but the Hoyas had a 9-6 advantage on corner kicks. Schechtman and XU goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro recorded three saves each. Additionally, Schechtman tallied her 12th shutout of the season and 44th overall.

Up next, the Blue & Gray will host the BIG EAST Championship semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 1 at Shaw Field after earning a bye in the quarterfinals. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. The Hoyas will face the winner of the game between fifth-seeded DePaul and fourth-seeded Xavier, which will be determined on Sunday in the quarterfinals.
