Sailing Places Second in War Memorial

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University sailing team competed in the War Memorial in Annapolis, Maryland over the weekend. The Hoyas finished second in a field of 18 teams at the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association's (MAISA) fall coed championship, hosted by Navy.
 
Between two divisions, 36 races were contested in the mouth of the Severn River this past weekend. On Saturday, 10 races were completed in a shifty breeze that ranged from 10-20 knots. The Blue & Gray was tied for third with Navy, tallying 112 points, after the first day of racing. Sunday saw the final eight races sailed in beautiful sunny conditions with an 8-14 knot westerly breeze. Georgetown finished the regatta with 181 points, 11 points behind the first-place Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
 
In the A Division, Sean Segerblom (Newport Beach, Calif. / Newport Harbor), Jack Hogan (Los Angeles, Calif. / Harvard-Westlake) and Rebecca Fung (Rye, N.Y. / Rye) placed third out of 18 teams with 107 points. The trio finished nine out of the 18 races among the top five, including one first-place finish.
 
The team of Andy Reiter (Point Loma, Calif. / Point Loma), Claire Mohun (San Francisco, Calif. / Convent of the Sacred Heart), Caroline Teare (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands / Antilles School) and Haley Shea (Rye, N.Y. / Rye Country Day) led the B Division with 74 points. The four Hoyas placed among the top five in 13 out of the 18 races with four first-place decisions.

The Blue & Gray will compete next weekend, Nov. 3-4 in the 2018 ICSA National Singlehanded Championship in Holland, Michigan.
