The Hoyas moved the ball well in its first two possessions, but had both drives stall after reaching Fordham territory. After the defense forced its second-straight three-and-out, the Blue & Gray put it all together on its third drive. Johnson completed a pair of first down passes, going for 12 yards each, before hitting
Jay Tolliver (Columbus, Ohio / Gahanna Lincoln) for a 29-yard catch-and-run to put the Hoyas in the red zone. On the very next play, Johnson hit
Cameron Crayton (Rowlett, Texas / Rockwall) in the back corner for the freshman's first career touchdown.
On the ensuing PAT attempt,
Brady Weas (Whitefish Bay, Wis. / Whitefish Bay) snapped it directly to Tate, who bulldozed in for the two-point conversion to give the Hoyas an 8-0 lead with 4:38 remaining in the first quarter.
Georgetown's defense did not allow a first down until the final play of the opening quarter and only allowed Fordham to gain 32 yards in the first 15 minutes. The Rams broke through early in the second quarter, punching it in from the 2-yard line to make it 8-6 after the PAT kick was missed.
Two possessions later, a bad snap on a punt led to a safety for Fordham to tie things up, 8-8, midway through the second quarter. The score remained the same into halftime.
Both teams traded short possessions to open the third quarter before the Rams put together an 18-play, 62-yard drive. The GU defense came up strong in the red zone, holding Fordham to a 36-yard field goal to take an 11-8 lead.
The Hoyas answered right back on the ensuing possession. A 16-yard rush by Johnson picked up a key first down before Moultrie broke open a 41-yard run to bring it down to the Fordham 6-yard line. Two plays later, Moultrie pushed it over the goal line for his first career touchdown.
Brad Hurst's (Helen, Ga. / White County) PAT made it 15-11 with just 36 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
After several scoreless possessions by both sides, Fordham took over on its own 28-yard line midway through the fourth quarter and GU still holding to a four-point lead. On the second play of the drive, Francois intercepted a tipped pass to give the Hoyas the ball.
Georgetown ran nearly five minutes off the clock, but could not score. The Rams took over again, looking to drive against the Hoyas. Francois again came away with the pick, returning the ball down to the 1-yard line. Moultrie ran the ball in on the next play to put GU up, 21-11.
The defense iced the game as back-to-back sacks – the first by
Xavier Reddick (Powder Springs, Ga. / McEachern) and the second by Tate and
Duval Paul (Lynn, Mass. / Everett) – led to a Georgetown safety, making it 23-11 with just over a minute left to play.
The Hoyas will complete their three-game road swing next weekend as they travel to Easton, Pennsylvania to play Lafayette. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13.
