WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's soccer squad will close out nonconference play on Monday hosting the University of Maryland at 3 p.m. at Shaw Field. The game will be streamed live on GUHoyas.com with alums Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser calling the action. The Hoyas are currently 6-3-2 overall and 4-2-1 in nonconference play.
GU shut out the Butler University Bulldogs, 2-0, Friday evening in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at the Butler Bowl. Senior captain
Kyle Zajec (Westport, Conn. / Staples) managed a goal and an assist, while junior defender
Dylan Nealis (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) scored the game winner in the contest. Georgetown outshot Butler, 14-12, but the Bulldogs were awarded six corner kicks to GU's four. Freshman goalkeeper
Giannis Nikopolidis (Athens, Greece / Nea Genia Zirdi) took the win and shutout in the goal with two saves to his credit.
Sophomore forward
Derek Dodson (Aurora, Ill. / Waubonsie Valley) and Zajec are leading the team in scoring with 10 points apiece. Dodson has tallied five goals on the year, while Zajec has three goals and a squad-best four assists. They are followed by junior forward
Achara (Enugu, Nigeria / Berkshire School [Mass.]) who has nine points for the season with four goals and an assist. Nealis rounds out the top four with a goal and four assists for six points on the year. Nikopolidis has played in 10 games and tallied 34 saves with a 0.86 GAA.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair tallied five saves as Maryland (4-4-2) fell to No. 13 Michigan State, 2-0, on Friday. After allowing an early goal, St. Clair kept the Terps close through the evening. But, an 80th-minute goal while the Terps played with 10 men distanced the Spartans down the stretch. William James Herve leads the Terps in scoring with eight points coming off of three goals and two assists on the year. Eric Matzelevich has five points on a goal and a squad-best three assists. St. Clair has played all 960 minutes in goal with a 0.84 GAA on the season.
The Hoyas are 3-29-1 overall against the Terps and 1-19 at home, however, GU has won or tied four of the past five meetings. Last year, a goal in the 88th minute from
Jacob Montes (Lake Worth, Fla. / Beaverton [Ore.]) sealed the victory at Ludwig Field. The last meeting at Shaw Field was a 2-1 Hoya victory during the 2015 season. A goal in the 83rd minute proved to be the game winner for the Blue & Gray.
Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Shaw Field. Live stats and the webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
