Hoyas Win Overtime Thriller Over USF at Jamaica Classic

MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica – With 4.9 seconds left in regulation, James Akinjo (Oakland, Calif. / Salesian College Preparatory) nailed a deep 3-pointer to tie the game at 63 and sent the Georgetown University men's basketball team and the USF Bulls into overtime. Strong play from Jessie Govan (Queens Village, N.Y. / Wings Academy) and Akinjo in the extra frame helped the Hoyas to the 76-73 thrilling victory to close GU's final game at the Montego Bay Convention Centre as part of the Jamaica Classic. With the win, the Blue & Gray improve to 4-1 on the season while the University of South Florida slips to 3-1. For his efforts, Govan was named to the Jersey Mike's Jamaica Classic All-Tournament Team following Sunday's action.

"It was a great team effort," Head Coach Patrick Ewing said. "It took everyone to get this win. We still have a lot of work to do but we will enjoy this and get back to DC."

Govan led all scorers with 27 points, including 18 and five in the second half and overtime period, respectively. Akinjo chipped in 14 of his own to go with a team-best five assists. Josh LeBlanc (Baton Rouge, La. / Madison Prep Academy) grabbed a squad-leading 10 rebounds and chipped in nine points on offense. Georgetown shot 43.1 percent for the game on 25 of 58 shooting and hit 21 of 27 free throws. GU's defense held USF to 36.4 percent shooting and forced 13 turnovers. The Hoyas outrebounded the Bulls, 42-40.

Jamorko Pickett (Washington, D.C. / Massanutten Military Academy [Va.]) was the first Hoya to get on the board to even the score at 2-2. Georgetown took its first lead of the game as Mac McClung (Gate City, Va. / Gate City) nailed back-to-back buckets for the 8-7 GU advantage. Consecutive jumpers from Govan and LeBlanc pushed the Blue & Gray ahead 12-9. An Akinjo dish to an open Jahvon Blair (Brampton, Ont. / Athlete Institute Prep) on the perimeter helped the Hoyas extend the run to seven unanswered. Following a pair of free throws, Jagan Mosely (Marlboro, N.J. / St. Anthony) managed a layup to force the South Florida timeout as the Hoyas were on an 11-0 run.

A pair of free throws ended the scoring drought for the Bulls as the Hoyas rendered them scoreless for more than seven minutes of action. Mosely tallied a pair of free throws to give the Hoyas the 21-11 advantage. The Bulls converted a conventional three-point play but McClung answered right back with a triple on the other end. USF cut the deficit to five pairing a trey and a layup to trail 24-19. GU was unable to convert on consecutive possessions and the Bulls knocked down a 3-pointer on the other end to pull within two, 24-22.

Akinjo sunk a pair of free throws to make it a two-possession game 26-22 with less than four minutes to go in the frame. South Florida cut the game to one on another triple but Akinjo's jumper put the Hoyas back up three, 28-25. USF hit a free throw in the waning seconds of the half as Georgetown went into the break with the 28-26 advantage.

Govan's free throws to start the half extended the lead to four, 30-26, but five quick points from a USF triple and layup swung the lead in favor of the Bulls and forced Georgetown to call a timeout at 18:45. Coming out of the huddle, Trey Mourning (Miami, Fla. / Ransom Everglades) hit a jumper to give the Hoyas the lead right back but USF tallied 12 unanswered to take the 43-32 advantage at 15:43. Govan ended the Hoya drought as he nailed a 3-pointer and made a jumper to cut the deficit to six, 43-37. Another pair of Govan buckets to go along with a Mosely free throw kept the Hoyas within two possessions, 47-42, with less than 12 minutes left in regulation.

USF, finding a sweet spot from beyond the arc in the second half, fired another 3-pointer but a pair of free throws from Greg Malinowski (Chantilly, Va. / Episcopal / William & Mary) pulled the Hoyas within seven, 51-44. Govan tallied back-to-back buckets to make it a one-possession game, down 53-50.

The Hoyas stayed within two scores as they trailed 55-51 at 3:46 for the official timeout. A steal turned into a layup on the other end for Akinjo and a Govan 3-pointer pulled the Hoyas within two, 58-56. Akinjo dished to an open LeBlanc who made the bucket to make it a one-point affair with just more than a minute left in regulation. With 55.8 on the clock, Akinjo connected on a jumper to regain the lead, 60-59.

USF managed a layup with 43 seconds on the clock for the 61-60 lead and the Bulls sunk a pair of free throws to take a 63-60 advantage with 13 seconds to play. On GU's final play of the frame, Akinjo took the ball up the court and drained a deep 3-pointer to force overtime.

Georgetown was the first on the board in the extra frame as Govan's shot inside gave the Hoyas a 65-63 lead. LeBlanc managed the putback dunk to give the Hoyas a four-point advantage. USF cut it to two but LeBlanc hit a free throw to extend the lead to three, 68-65. USF cut the gap again but Pickett found Govan on the inside who hit the jumper and converted the conventional three-point play to make it a two-possession game, 71-67. Despite a pair of USF free throws to close within two, Akinjo retorted on the other end to give the Blue & Gray some breathing room, 73-69.

Trading free throws, the Hoyas held a 74-70 advantage as Mosely hit the second of his pair of free throws for the 75-70 lead but with 2.2 seconds to play, the Bulls knocked down a 3-pointer to cut the gap to two. Blair hit a late free throw to provide the 76-73 score at the final whistle.

South Florida was led by David Collins with 21 points.

The Hoyas return home to the friendly confines of Capital One Arena on Saturday, November 24 to welcome the Campbell University Camels. The game will be shown on FSN and tipoff at the Blue & Gray's downtown home is set for noon. The game can be heard locally on The Team 980 with Rich Chvotkin in his 45th season on the call.
