WASHINGTON – Graduate student
Trey Mourning (Miami, Fla. / Ransom Everglades) tallied a career-high 27 points to lead all Georgetown scorers as the Hoyas defeated the Campbell University Camels 93-85 on Saturday afternoon at Capital One Arena. Mourning added 12 rebounds for the first double-double of his career. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 5-1 on the season while the Camels slip to 3-3.
"Last year he had to sit and watch because he was hurt," Head Coach
Patrick Ewing said of Mourning. "This year he can come out and contribute on the court. He has the ability to shoot and rebound and he did that tonight with seven offensive rebounds and 12 rebounds, which was a career high."
Mourning's 27 led four Hoyas in double figures as freshman
James Akinjo (Oakland, Calif. / Salesian College Preparatory) added 17, senior
Jessie Govan (Queens Village, N.Y. / Wings Academy) chipped in 13 and freshman
Josh LeBlanc (Baton Rouge, La. / Madison Prep Academy) tallied 11. Mourning grabbed a team-best 12 off the glass as the Blue & Gray outrebounded the Camels, 41-32. Akinjo paced the offense with four assists as the team totaled 22 helpers. GU hit 49.3 percent from the field on 33-of-67 shooting.
Georgetown quickly opened up the game on a 10-0 run bolstered by a 3-pointer from freshman
Mac McClung (Gate City, Va. / Gate City) and dunks from both Govan and sophomore
Jamorko Pickett (Washington, D.C. / Massanutten Military Academy [Va.]) prompting a Campbell timeout. Coming out of the huddle, the Camels tallied a quick five points but Akinjo put an end to the mini run with a bucket on the other end for the 12-5 GU advantage.
Campbell staged a 7-2 run to pull within three but a McClung triple pushed the Hoyas ahead six and made it a two-possession affair, 18-12. A 3-pointer and a bucket under the basket from Govan gave the Blue & Gray a double-digit lead, 24-14, and a triple from junior
Jagan Mosely (Marlboro, N.J. / St. Anthony) extended it to 13.
The Hoyas continued to push, leading by as many as 16 down the stretch, but Campbell scored 10 unanswered to pull within six, 35-29, before a pair of free throws from Mourning ended the GU scoring drought. As Georgetown went cold from the field, the Hoyas relied on defensive stops. The Blue & Gray got back in the scoring column on a Pickett trey and Akinjo's conventional three-point play as he drew the foul on a layup under the basket as the Hoyas led 45-33. Akinjo tallied one more jumper as the Hoyas took the 47-33 lead into the break.
The Hoyas were the first on the board as Mourning hit a 3-pointer to start the second frame. Akinjo followed up with a trey of his own and a Govan bucket gave the Blue & Gray the 17-point advantage, 55-38. A Mourning tip in was followed by a pair of free throws as he continued to pour in the points and GU held the 63-47 lead.
Govan dished to an open
Greg Malinowski (Chantilly, Va. / Episcopal / William & Mary) who hit the layup and, on the following possession, Govan managed a bucket of his own as the Hoyas took the 68-51 lead. The crowd roared as Mourning tallied another basket and came to its feet again as
Jahvon Blair's (Brampton, Ontario / Athlete Institute Prep) no-look pass went to an open LeBlanc who scored the layup and extended Georgetown's lead to 20, 76-56.
LeBlanc hit another layup followed by a Mourning three-point play as he drew the foul on the layup and hit his free throw for the 22-point GU advantage, 81-59. The Camels would not back down as three-straight 3-pointers from Chris Clemons cut the deficit to 13 with 5:05 to play. A pair of Camel free throws and a layup tightened Georgetown's lead to single digits as the Hoyas went more than three minutes without scoring. Akinjo's layup and free throw following the foul ended the drought and pushed GU's lead back to double digits, 84-72. Campbell continued to hit treys to cut the deficit but Georgetown held off the Camels as Akinjo nailed four free throws in the waning moments for the final 93-85 GU victory.
Campbell's Chris Clemons led the squad with 45 points.
The Hoyas return to action on Wednesday, November 28 as they welcome the Richmond Spiders to the Nation's Capital for a 7 p.m. matchup at Capital One Arena. The game will be shown live on CBS Sports Network with Tom McCarthy and Steve Lappas on the call. The game can be heard locally on The Team 980 with Rich Chvotkin in his 45th season calling the game.
