WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's rowing team will look to end its fall slate on a high note as they head to Sandy Run, Virginia for the Head of the Occoquan Regatta on Saturday. The Hoyas will send their entire fleet of boats, which includes three varsity lightweight eights, a lightweight frosh eight, three varsity lightweight fours, two varsity heavyweight eights, a heavyweight frosh eight and two varsity heavyweight fours, to race on the Occoquan River.
Heavyweight
The Georgetown heavyweights will first compete in the collegiate varsity men's 8+ race at 11:30 a.m. The "A" boat will feature
Maxim Goohs (Potomac, Md) as the coxswain, with
Justin English (Bettendorf, Iowa) at stroke,
Jack Mozingo (Darien, Conn.),
Luke Nassif (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.),
Daniel Eigler-Harding (Arlington, Va.),
Ian Estevao (Arlington, Va.),
Zach Lee (Chelsea, Mich.),
Owen O'Brien Powers (Portland, Ore.) and William Cave (Dallas, Texas). The Blue & Gray will race against other collegiate crews such as Saint Joseph's, Maryland, Penn State, and George Mason.
The Hoyas will also send a pair of varsity four boats to compete for the first time since the Navy Day Regatta back in September. Goohs will be at the helm, followed by Nassif, Eigler-Harding, Lee and Estavao rounding out the "A" boat for the Blue & Gray. Georgetown will finish the day with the collegiate freshman eight event.
"It's been a long week of hard training and the squad has done a good job shifting around as we continue to battle health issues with our top 16 rowers," said Head Coach
Luke Agnini. "The name of the game this weekend is opportunity. We've slowed things down considerably over the last few sessions to really drive home the fundamentals. How well the boats can perform tomorrow will all depend on how they execute the basics and do them well over three miles. It's a young group and they tend to tense up when bad water and conditions hit. This weekend will be all about getting it back, staying relaxed and executing. Three miles is a long way to hold form. It will take peak focus and discipline to keep it clean and effective, but aggressive from start to finish."
Lightweight
The Georgetown lightweight crews first hit the water for the collegiate lightweight men's 8+ race at 11:30 a.m. as the Hoyas send three varsity eights to the course. The "A" boat will feature
Hannah Elwell (Worcester, Mass.) as the coxswain with
Artym Hayda (Providence, R.I.),
Olivier Malle (New York, N.Y.),
Joe Cecil (Alpharetta, Ga.),
Kiefer Mueller (Rye, N.Y.),
Reid Noch (Naples, Fla.),
Jonathan Menendez (Miami Lakes, Fla.),
Charles Koontz (Ridgewood, N.J.) and
Liam Lafferty (Orinda, Calif.) to round out the eight.
The final event of the day for the Blue & Gray will feature a trio of Georgetown boats in the men's lightweight 4+ event. In the A boat,
Ryan Zuccala (Orchard Park, N.Y.) is at the helm, with Malle at stroke, followed by Cecil, Mueller and Hayda to complete the foursome. Ending the day for the lightweights will be the lightweight freshmen 8+ event featuring
Helena Yang (New York, N.Y.) at coxswain,
John Dailey (Rye, N.Y.),
Ryan Walter (Williamsville, N.Y.),
Mark Laforce (Redwood City, Calif.),
Austin Sammons (Rye, N.Y.),
Andrew Peck (Toronto, Ont.),
Santo Scarfone (Grosse Pointe, Mich.), Tim Rudolph-Math (Rye, N.Y.) and
Ryan Young (Mount Kisco, N.Y.). The men will battle a competitive field comprised of schools from VCU, George Mason, Maryland and Carnegie Mellon, among others.
The Hoyas will return to competition in March to begin its spring slate of races.
