WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's rowing team wrapped up their fall season on Saturday with a dominating performance at the 34th Head of the Occoquan in Fairfax, Virginia. The Hoya lightweights won each event they competed in, with the heavyweights posting three top-five finishes.
Lightweight
The Georgetown lightweights were able to rebound from a week ago in Princeton with a clean sweep of today's races. In the collegiate varsity men's 8+ race, the Hoyas captured fist place by a wide margin with a time of 14:38.74. The winning boat featured
Hannah Elwell (Worcester, Mass.) as the coxswain with
Artym Hayda (Providence, R.I.),
Olivier Malle (New York, N.Y.),
Joe Cecil (Alpharetta, Ga.),
Kiefer Mueller (Rye, N.Y.),
Reid Noch (Naples, Fla.),
Jonathan Menendez (Miami Lakes, Fla.),
Charles Koontz (Ridgewood, N.J.) and
Liam Lafferty (Orinda, Calif.) to round out the eight.
The Blue & Gray were also able to come away victorious in the collegiate junior varsity 8+ with a time of 15:20.81 finishing ahead of second-place Marietta College by 28 seconds. Possibly the most notable performance came from the collegiate freshman men's 8+ event where the Hoyas finished in first place with a time of 15:39.47 ahead of second place Delaware by 55 seconds.
In the men's collegiate varsity 4+, the GU lightweights seized their fourth victory of the day with a time of 16:19.00. The "A" boat consisted of Elwell as the coxswain, with Malle at stroke, followed by Cecil, Mueller and Hayda. The Hoyas rounded out the day with their fifth first-place finish in the men's collegiate lightweight 4+ posting a time of 17:26.94.
Heavyweight
In the collegiate varsity men's 8+ race, the Hoyas finished in second place posting a time of 14:52.87. The Blue & Gray were able to finish ahead of crews from Saint Joseph's and Delaware who had edged out Georgetown the week before at the Princeton Chase. The heavyweights also came away with a fifth-place finish in the men's collegiate varsity 4+ event with a time of 16:56.47. In the men's collegiate junior varsity 4+ race, the Hoyas finished in second place to round out an impressive day for the GU heavyweights.
"Overall a great day for the program," said Head Coach
Luke Agnini. "The lightweights won both the open 8 and 4 entries and their senior leadership is really paying dividends right now. On the heavyweight side, we unfortunately had to scratch a couple of 8's entries due to last minute sickness. The open 8 entry did a great job capitalizing on the last few days of refining fundamentals. Sophomore
Zach Lee did a tremendous job in his first boat debut today. His first rowing race ever was this regatta a year ago. He's shown he will make a legitimate push for the varsity boat this spring. Given the conditions and relative inexperience of that boat, they did a great job of evolving this week and came down the course aggressively. They rebounded from bobbles well and were able to reestablish rhythm through rough conditions. That's a great sign of maturity for such a young crew and bodes well for the spring."
The Hoyas will return to competition in March to begin their spring slate of races.
