WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball squad upset the RV/24 DePaul University Blue Demons (20-7, 12-3 BIG EAST), 86-85, in a BIG EAST Conference matchup Friday evening at McGrath-Phillips Arena. Junior guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) had a career night with 33 points to lead the Blue & Gray. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 12-13 overall and 7-8 in league play with three games remaining.
"Tonight took a team effort, we played well as a team," said Georgetown Head Coach James Howard. "We gave up more points than we wanted, but one thing we did find tonight was find a will to win and offensive production. When you have two of your top scorers have 33 and 23, you know that everything is falling your way."
White's career high was coupled with four steals, four rebounds and three assists. Senior forward Cynthia Petke (Yaounde, Cameroon/-/Chipola College) tallied her 14th double-double of the season with 23 points and a team-best 11 rebounds. She also had three assists and two steals. Rounding out those in double figures was freshman Tatiana Thompson (Winter Haven, Fla./Winter Haven) with 10 points including a 2-of-2 performance from beyond the arc, both coming in the fourth quarter.
The Hoyas outrebounded the Blue Demons, 32-29, and GU forced 19 turnovers on 14 steals while committing just 11 turnovers in the contest. Georgetown shot 52.2 percent (36-of-69) from the field, but allowed 53.6 percent (30-of-56) shooting from DePaul.
Leading by one in the final minute, the Hoyas had the chance to add two more points but the attempt was missed. With 23 seconds left, a GU foul put DePaul on the line where Coleman sank both to move the Blue Demons ahead, 85-84. Howard called timeout and set up a play but the layup was missed. Sophomore guard Morgan Smith (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist) was on the back side and perfectly positioned to bring down the rebound before going right back up with it to give the Hoyas the lead. DePaul would call timeout to set up a last-second play, but the Hoya defense stood strong as GU came away with the 86-85 victory.
"That was a big time put back from Morgan Smith who had an outstanding game defensively," said Howard. "That rebound on the back side was the difference that put us over the top."
It was senior Yazmine Belk (Queens, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) that carried the Hoyas early with a trio of jumpers. However, DePaul was on fire from downtown hitting four 3-pointers in the first six minutes of the contest to build an 18-10 lead and force a Hoya timeout. The defense buckled down and began to force turnovers as White had back-to-back layups. A putback from Petke made it 21-16 at the end of the first in favor of the Blue Demons.
An early run to begin the second quarter tied the game at 23 as White hit a trey. With the game at a furious pace, sophomore guard Marvellous Osagie-Erese (East Orange, N.J./East Orange STEM Academy) pulled down a rebound and slowed the tempo. She found Thompson who broke through a pair of defenders to bank in a layup GU its first lead of the game, 25-23. It was a 9-2 run to open the quarter and a 15-2 run spanning the two periods with White tallying 11 of the points.
DePaul stopped the momentum with a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws, but Petke answered with a layup. The Blue Demons would come back to move ahead by as much as nine, but the Hoyas withstood the pressure and went into the break trailing by six, 40-34, on a buzzer beater from White.
Georgetown opened the third quarter strong, cutting the deficit to two. However, that was when the Blue Demons began raining threes. The Hoyas didn't give up and, despite the short bench due to injury, GU kept up the pace as White and Petke took over the game to cut it to three, 55-52. Unfortunately, DePaul would score two late buckets to end the third quarter leading, 61-54.
DePaul controlled the game early in the fourth quarter, but was never able to pull away. With the stingy GU defense, the Hoyas kept it under 10 before they could make their move. At 7:20 and trailing by eight, Thompson sank a jumper and Smith added back-to-back layups to pull the Hoyas within two, 72-70.
A Thompson 3-pointer would make it a one-point game as the teams went into the final five minutes in a battle.
DePaul answered with a trey, but a Petke jumper and another by Thompson from downtown gave the Blue & Gray the 80-79 lead. Free throws gave the lead back to the Blue Demons, but moments later, senior point guard DiDi Burton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College Prep) stepped to the line and sank two to make it 82-81.
This would set up the final exciting minute as the Hoyas went on to win, 86-85.
The victory marked GU's first win over DePaul since January 23, 2010, and also marked the first time since joining the BIG EAST that the Hoyas have defeated DePaul in Chicago.
