GU MBB 69, Providence 74
WASHINGTON - Despite a late comeback attempt, the Georgetown University men's basketball team dropped a 74-69 decision to the visiting Providence College Friars on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, Georgetown slips to 15-12 on the season with a 5-11 mark in BIG EAST play, while PC improves to 18-12 on the year with a 9-8 record in league action.
"We're going through growing pains," Head Coach Patrick Ewing said after the game. "We're going to have good games and bad games. For right now, we're going to have nights like this. We have to keep striving to get better."
Junior center Jessie Govan (Queens Village, N.Y./Wings Academy) led all scorers with 20 points and he tallied his 13th double-double on the year with 11 rebounds. Govan also tallied his 1,000th career point in the game. Junior forward Marcus Derrickson (Bowie, Md./Brewster Academy [N.H.]) also recorded his seventh double-double of the season with 11 points and 15 boards. Freshman guard Jamorko Pickett(Washington, D.C./Massanutten Military Academy [Va.]) and sophomore guard Jagan Mosely (Marlboro, N.J./St. Anthony) rounded out those in double figures chipping in 12 apiece. Graduate student guard Trey Dickerson (Queens, N.Y./God's Academy [Texas]/South Dakota) paced the offense with six assists aided by Mosely's five.
"It's an honor (to reach 1,000 points)," Govan said. "There are a lot of great names on that list. From Sleepy Floyd, Patrick Ewing and LJ Peak. I wish my team would have won (today) but it was a goal of mine at the beginning of the season to reach 1,000."
The junior trio of Govan, Derrickson and forward Kaleb Johnson (South Hill, Va./The Carlisle School) combined for the first 10 points for the Hoyas as the Blue & Gray managed the 10-9 advantage early in the game. A bucket from Dickerson and a long ball from Pickett put the Hoyas ahead, 15-11, with 12:19 on the clock
The Hoyas continued to push forward with a pair of buckets from Govan and Mosely as well as a triple from freshman guard Jahvon Blair (Brampton, Ont./Athlete Institute Prep) to put the Blue & Gray ahead 23-15. Providence came right back with eight unanswered, prompting GU to call a timeout. Seven quick points bolstered by a Mosely trey sandwiched between a pair of Govan buckets put the Hoyas back up, 30-23.
Both teams would continue to trade buckets and the Friars closed to within four, 32-28 on a 3-pointer but a commanding dunk from Govan on the other end brought the crowd to its feet as the Hoyas pushed ahead. However, Providence would not go away staging a late 7-2 run to make it a one-point game with 1:29 left in the frame. Pickett's dunk with 41 seconds on the clock stopped PC's momentum and the Blue & Gray closed the half on a layup from Govan to take the 40-35 lead into the break.
The Hoyas struggled with point production early in the second half and PC took advantage with a 16-6 run to open the stanza, holding the 51-46 advantage. Georgetown stayed in the game as a Pickett 3-pointer cut the deficit to four, 53-49, but Providence continued to find success on the perimeter, taking a 59-49 lead on another long ball.
Pickett hit another trey to break up the scoring and cut the deficit to single digits, 59-52. Georgetown continued to claw its way back into the game, pulling within six on a Mosely triple followed by pair of free throws from Govan to make it 64-58. The teams went back and forth but a Govan trey raised the decibels in the arena as the Hoyas were within four, 66-62. The Friars tallied another basket on the other end but, on the ensuing possession, Mosely went in for the layup, drew the foul and completed the traditional three-point play to pull the Hoyas within three.
The Blue & Gray managed a stop on the other end and on the next possession Derrickson cut the deficit to one as he floated his jumper in, 68-67. PC hit a pair of free throws to pull ahead once again but Derrickson again came up with the answer on a layup from the Mosely dish with 1:11 left in regulation, 70-69. However, that is as close as the Blue & Gray would get as Providence clinched the 74-69 victory.
Providence shot 44.4 percent for the game. Rodney Bullock led the way with 19 points.
