WASHINGTON - For the first time since the 2008, the Georgetown men's tennis team defeated crosstown rival George Washington, 4-1. The Hoyas earned their victory on Saturday morning in Washington, D.C., improving them to 6-5 this season.
"There's no question that this was a big moment for us and a historical win for the program," said Assistant Coach Courtney Dolehide. "We have very experienced leaders and a strong group of freshmen with an impressive sense of urgency. With that being said, we have aspirations that go far beyond what we did today."
GU started off strong by winning the doubles point. Junior Will Sharton (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) and freshman Charlie Sharton (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) knocked off Chris Fletcher and Christos Hadjigeorgiou, 6-3, at No. 2. Sophomore Ian Witmer (North Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) and junior Michael Chen (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) defeated William Tutecky and Kaan Tuna, 6-1, at the No. 3 position.
In singles action, Chen won his match at the No. 4 spot against Hadjigeorgiou, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, while senior Marco Lam (Hong Kong, China/Diocesan Boys' School) knocked off Jakub Behun, 7-6, 6-0. Sharton (Charlie) dominated both of his sets against Amlan Sahoo, 6-0, 6-0.
The Blue & Gray will return to action Thursday, April 19 to face another local foe, George Mason, in Fairfax, Virginia at 3 p.m.
