Georgetown Sailing Set for 2018 ICSA National Championships

May 22, 2018

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University sailing team will compete in all three spring national championships as part of the 2018 Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) National Championships, held Tuesday, May 23 through Friday, June 2, in Norfolk, Virginia. All three championships will be hosted by Old Dominion University at the ODU Sailing Center in Norfolk. The championships are the culmination of two seasons of intense competition and include the top schools from across the nation vying for the championship titles. It is the 11th-straight year the Hoyas have qualified for all three spring national championships.

2018 ICSA Sperry College Sailing Women's National Championship (May 22-25)
Racing is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. ET on Tueday, May 22. The sailors will sail LaserPerformance Club Flying Juniors (FJs) and LaserPerformance Z420s, on the waters of the Elizabeth River.

The championship welcomes 36 teams competing in two 18-team semifinal rounds. The top nine teams from each group will then advance to the finals, an 18-boat regatta, which will take place on the last two days of the championships.

2018 ICSA LaserPerformance Team Race National Championships (May 26-28)
Racing for the team race national championships is set to begin on Saturday, May 26 at 10 a.m. ET. The championship welcomes 16 of the country's best team race institutions. Sailors will compete in FJs and Z420s on the Elizabeth River.

The first round of racing is a single round robin with all 16 teams of three boats competing against each other. The top eight from this round will advance to a single championship round robin, followed by a final four round robin, both of which will only be sailed in Z420s, to determine the national champion.

Georgetown sailing has twice been the recipient of the Walter C. Wood Trophy for winning the ICSA team race national championships. The most recent occurrence was in 2006 and the first time was in 2001, both under the tutelage of Sailing Head Coach Michael J. Callahan.

2018 ICSA Gill Coed National Championships (May 29-June 1)
Racing for the coed national championships is set to begin on Tuesday, May 29 at 10 a.m. ET. Sailors will again compete in FJs and Z420s on the Elizabeth River.

The championship welcomes 36 of the top teams in the country that qualified from their respective conferences to compete. The semifinal will be divided into two 18-team rounds. The top nine teams from each semifinal will advance to the finals round, an 18-boat regatta on the last two days of the championships, May 31-June 1. The national champion will receive the Henry A. Morss Memorial Trophy.

The Hoyas have claimed the Morss Trophy three times, most recently in 2016 as well as in 2012 and for the first time in 2008, all during Callahan's tenure.
