AUSTIN, Texas - The Georgetown University women's golf team opened the NCAA Austin Regional, hosted by the University of Texas, with a 14-over par 302 to sit in 17th place after the first round of play on Monday. Play took place at the par-72, 6,341-yard University of Texas Golf Club.
The Hoyas, seeded 16th of the 18 teams in the regional, were 12th in the standings as late as 14 holes in, but faltered down the stretch to finish the day in 17th. They are just four strokes out of being in the top 10. Eighth-ranked Texas sits in first place at seven under par 281, while third-ranked Arkansas (284) and No. 11 Michigan State (285) are both under par and round out the top three. Georgetown is just four strokes behind No. 30 Miami, three strokes back of No. 21 Oklahoma and No. 48 East Carolina, two behind No. 25 Houston and No. 49 Texas Tech and one stroke back of Houston Baptist. Missouri State is in 18th place, 17 shots behind the Hoyas.
Junior Alexa Popowitz (Boca Raton, Fla./St. Andrew's) was Georgetown's top scorer, carding a 1-under par 71 to finish the first round in the tie for 15th.
Senior Jacquelyn Eleey (Quincy, Mass./The Taft School) posted two-straight birdies on the front-9, and opened the back-9 with another birdie, but a late double bogey left her with a 4-over par 76 on the day and in a tie for 55th place. Junior Pendleton Bogache (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Episcopal [Va.]) is in a tie for 70th after carding a 5-over par 77, while sophomore Ashley Fitzgibbons (Sammamish, Wash./Eastlake Senior) shot a 2-over par on the back-9 to finish with an overall score of 6-over par 78 and in 77th place. Junior Christina Parsells (Bernardsville, N.J./Kent Place) had a pair of late double bogeys to finish with a 9-over par 81 and in a tie for 87th.
The regional will resume with second-round play on Tuesday morning with teams teeing off beginning at 9 a.m. ET. The Hoyas will again begin play on the 10th hole at 10:50 a.m. ET and will be paired with Houston Baptist and Missouri State for the second-consecutive day.
