Georgetown Sailing Finishes Third at ICSA Coed National Championship

June 1, 2018

WASHINGTON - After the last two days of competition, the Georgetown University sailing team finished third at the ICSA Gill Coed National Championship. With just three points separating the second-, third- and fourth-place teams, the Blue & Gray edged out Hobart & William Smith by one point to make the podium.

Though MIT put itself far ahead of the field, the race for the remaining spots among the four was tight.

"Today was a super hot day, so we kept the sailors under the tent and hydrated, but it was a mental challenge to stay focused all day," said Head Coach Michael J. Callahan. "Our A division was really consistent and sailed well and I am really happy with their performance. Our B division had some younger sailors who rose to the occasion and I am proud of their sailing."

Georgetown's A division duo of Sean Segerblom (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor) and Meaghan MacRae (Melrose, Mass./Tabor Academy) put up a score of 89 points to finish second and closed on a win in the final race to help solidify the team's performance.

In the B division, the Hoyas looked to William Logue (Cos Cob, Conn./St. George's) and Caroline Teare (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands/Antilles School), who finished fifth in the division with 106 points. The pair ended the day with a third-place showing, its second of the day.

Georgetown combined for a total of four points in the final frame to edge out the Statesmen for third and take home the Metropolitan Sailing League Trophy, which was first presented in 1971. "What kept us in the races was good starts, getting off the line clean and out in the top of the fleet so we could use good tactics and boat speed," explained Callahan.
