WASHINGTON – The No. 22 Georgetown University women's soccer team played Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon to a 1-1 tie in Blacksburg, Virginia. as the final game of the Virginia Tech Tournament. With the draw, the Hoyas move to 1-0-1 overall while the Hokies picked up their second tie of the season and hold a 0-0-2 record.
"This was a very hard fought game against a physical, competitive Virginia Tech on their home field," says Head Coach
Dave Nolan. "We started very well, scored and had some chances to score a second. They scored against the run of play just before break which knocked us back a bit. After that, both teams had chances in regulation and OT. It sets us up nicely for a home game against Duke on Thursday."
GU started out with an aggressive offense, taking five shots to Virginia Tech's two in the first half. The Hoyas took five corner shots in the first half while the Hokies were not given any. Georgetown's defense controlled the pace and did not allow Virginia Tech to face senior goalkeeper
Arielle Schechtman (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla Country Day/UCLA) at the net alone.
The Blue & Gray entered the scoring column at the 20th minute when senior
Caitlin Farrell (Wallingford, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) gave the Hoyas a 1-0 lead. Sophomore
Grace Nguyen (Lilburn, Ga./Parkview) took a corner kick that reached junior
Carson Nizialek (Chantilly, Va./Freedom) who then found Farrell and headed it into the back of the net.
Georgetown led the game until the Hokies found a way to get past GU's intimidating defense and evened the score at 32:59 as Karlie Johnson found the back of the net. The score remained 1-1 going into the second half.
Virginia Tech played more aggressively in the second half than they did in the first, which caused the Hoyas to step up their defense. The Hokies outshot GU, 7-3, in the latter half and put much more pressure on Georgetown.
In the two 10-minute overtime periods, neither team generated a solid chance resulting in an even score.
The Hokies outshot the Hoyas, 14-8, and took four corner kicks to Georgetown's seven. Schechtman recorded seven saves while Virginia Tech's goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn had four.
The Blue & Gray will host No. 3 Duke on Thursday, August 23 in its home opener at Shaw Field and is set for 4 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network with Monika Moore calling the action. Live stats for the game can be found at www.GUHoyas.com.
