No. 13 Hoyas Open the Season at South Carolina and No. 18 Coastal Carolina

WASHINGTON – The No. 13 Georgetown University men's soccer squad will open the 2018 season on Friday evening at the University of South Carolina at 7 p.m.  The squad will then make the short trip to Conway, South Carolina to battle the No. 18 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.  Live stats and a webcast for Friday's contest will be available on GUHoyas.com. Live stats and a webcast will be available for Sunday's game.
The Hoyas went 2-0-1 in preseason play, downing Delaware and Penn State, before tying No. 15 Virginia. GU finished the season with a mark of 14-4-2. Georgetown claimed the 2017 BIG EAST Championship and earned an automatic NCAA Tournament berth. It marked the second championship in three years for the Blue & Gray as well as the second tournament championship in program history.  GU lost two players to Major League Soccer as well as a number of key seniors, but returns seven starters from a season ago.
Last week, GU was picked first in the BIG EAST Conference Preseason Coaches Poll as the reigning league champions. Additionally, senior Brendan McDonough (Matthews, N.C. / Charlotte Catholic) was named the BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year while forwards Achara (Enugu, Nigeria / Berkshire School [Mass.]) and Derek Dodson (Aurora, Ill. / Waubonsie Valley) both earned spots on the Preseason All-BIG EAST squad.
Along with preseason player of the year honors, McDonough was also one of four unanimous selections to the Preseason All-BIG EAST team.  The second-year captain was already named to the Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Hermann Trophy Watch List earlier in the month.
The Hoyas received seven first-place votes and a total of 79 points. Butler earned the remaining three first-place votes and a total of 73 points.  Both Georgetown and Butler represented the league in the NCAA Tournament field last season.
The Gamecocks return 14 letterwinners and eight starters from 2017 in the fold for the upcoming season.  Luca Mayr was a Preseason All-Conference USA after leading the team in points (18), goals (6) and assists (6) on the way to earning First Team All-C-USA honors in 2017.  This season, USC will face seven 2017 NCAA Tournament qualifiers.
This will be the first meeting between the squads.
Coastal finished the 2017 season going 10-1-1 over its final 12 matches and ended the year ranked as high as ninth in one national poll.  The Chants lost at eventual NCAA Champion Stanford in last year's third round of the NCAA Tournament following regular season and tournament titles.  CCU lost 13 seniors off last year's championship team, including Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year and the 27th overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft, Frantzdy Pierrot.  Coastal returns 12 players off last year's roster, five of which have starting experience.
The Hoyas are 2-0 all-time against the Chanticleers.  Last season, Georgetown defeated Coastal, 3-0, at home at Shaw Field.  Christopher Lema, Peter Schropp (Omaha, Neb. / Creighton Prep) and Achara all scored in the contest for the Blue & Gray.  The previous meeting was a neutral site 3-0 victory during the 2009 season.
