No. 15 Hoyas Defeat Yale on Sunday Afternoon

WASHINGTON – The No. 15 Georgetown University women's soccer team had a season-high three goals against Yale on Sunday afternoon to top the Bulldogs, 3-1, at Shaw Field. With the win, GU advances to 2-0-2 this season while Yale falls to 1-1.

"Most importantly, the thing about today was the results," said Head Coach Dave Nolan. "We got a win against a very good opponent who has to challenge hard for the Ivy League Conference, so we knew it was going to be a tough game. We had hoped, and as it turned out that it worked out, that early in the season, because they start later than everybody, that our fitness would give us an advantage. Giving up the early goal gave them belief and something to fight for, but eventually I think we wore them down and we got our just rewards."

The Hoyas and the Bulldogs came out ready to play in the first half as it was an aggressive match between the two squads. Yale took the lead early on in the game when Aerial Chavarin scored past junior goalkeeper Lauren Gallagher (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) at the sixth minute. Gallagher saved Chavarin's first shot, but the ball led right back to her and she was able to score as Gallagher was still recovering from the first save. Gallagher had a crucial save minutes later as the Bulldogs came close to scoring their second goal of the game.

The Blue & Gray did not give up as it looked to score its first goal in the 23rd minute when senior Caitlin Farrell (Wallingford, Conn./Choates Rosemary Hall) crossed the ball over to graduate student Kyra Carusa (San Diego, Calif./Del Norte/Stanford) who just missed the net and hit the post instead.

Georgetown was finally able to even the score, 1-1, at the 34th minute off of a well-placed free kick by junior Carson Nizialek (Chantilly, Va./Freedom) on the left side of the box. Nizialek sought out Carusa as she snuck the ball just inside the post. This marked Carusa's second goal of the season and Nizialek's second assist.

With a 1-1 tied score going into the second half and three minutes of resumed play, freshman Boo Jackson (Marlton, N.J./Lenape Regional) took control of the ball from the top of the box as she found the back of the net just inches above Yale goalkeeper Jane Buckley's head, giving the Hoyas the go-ahead goal. It was the first goal of Jackson's collegiate career.

Georgetown controlled most of the second half and had possession of the ball the majority of it. The Blue & Gray scored once more at the 71st minute to secure a 3-1 win when Carusa found Farrell inside the box as Farrell's kick soared past Buckley in the net. Carusa recorded her first assist of the season and Farrell had her second goal.

The Hoya defense pressured the Bulldogs the remainder of the game and Gallagher recorded three saves overall to Yale's five. GU outshot the Bulldogs, 13-6, and had 10 corner kicks to Yale's four.

The Blue & Gray will be back in action on Thursday as the team takes on local rival George Washington at GW Soccer Field. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. For more information, visit www.GUHoyas.com.
