Georgetown Dominates at Chesapeake Invitational

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University sailing team continued its strong start to the 2018-19 season over the weekend in three different regattas. Three of four Hoya boats finished within the top five in the Chesapeake Invitational on Saturday at St. Mary's and then took the top three spots in the same regatta on Sunday. GU finished fifth in the Mid-Atlantic Sailing Association (MAISA) Laser Elimination, hosted by the Naval Academy, and third in the Faye Bennet MAISA Women's Singles, also hosted by Navy.

Chesapeake Invitational (Sept. 15-16; St. Mary's City, Md.)
The Hoyas entered four boats into the Chesapeake Invitational in eight races each day. In a new regatta using a new format, the top five teams in the southern region of the MAISA each sent multiple doublehanded teams to the regatta. Each boat sailed as an individual team and each day of racing was scored separately.

Three out of GU's four boats finished among the top five on Saturday. The duo of seniors Andy Reiter (Point Loma, Calif. / Point Loma) and Claire Mohun (San Francisco, Calif. / Convent of the Sacred Heart) finished among the top five in more than half of the races with 40 points. Junior Sean Segerblom (Newport Beach, Calif. / Newport Harbor) and senior Rebecca Fung (Rye, N.Y. / Rye) finished two points behind in third place with 42 points. Segerblom and Fung finished six out of the eight races among the top five.

On Sunday, GU dominated the regatta and swept the top three spots. Junior William Logue (Cos Cob, Conn. / St. George's) and sophomore Caroline Teare (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands / Antilles School) defeated the other 17 boats with 39 points. The second place spot was awarded to freshman Jack Reiter (Point Loma, Calif. / Point Loma) and senior Haley Shea (Rye, N.Y. / Rye Country Day) with 43 points, going neck and neck with the Hoya boat that finished third place. Segerblom and Fung claimed that spot with 53 points, falling in the final race of the day that caused them to fall behind Reiter and Shea.
