No. 11 Georgetown Shuts Out West Virginia

WASHINGTON – The No. 11 Georgetown women's soccer team shut out longtime rival West Virginia, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon in Morgantown, West Virginia. With the win, GU advances to 4-0-2, while the Mountaineers fall to 1-2-3. The victory records Georgetown's fourth shutout this season.

The Hoyas scored a pair of goals to defeat West Virginia, one in each half. Junior Meaghan Nally (Herndon, Va. / South Lakes) put the Blue & Gray on the board in the 35th minute with an assist from sophomore Grace Nguyen (Lilburn, Va. / Parkview). Georgetown sealed the win with 15 minutes left to play when graduate student Kyra Carusa (San Diego, Calif. / Del Norte / Stanford) found a loose ball in the box and scored unassisted.

"This was a great win on the road against a top program in West Virginia," said Head Coach Dave Nolan. "They put us under real pressure at moments in the game and I thought the girls worked so hard to limit their chances. On the other side, we always carried a threat when we attacked. We scored off a corner kick and then Kyra scored an incredible second goal for us which killed the game. I am so proud of this group as we work hard every day to get better and that's our focus."

GU's offense found its rhythm within the first minute of play when senior Caitlin Farrell (Wallingford, Conn. / Choates Rosemary Hall) took a shot that went wide but set the pace for the game. In the fourth minute, senior goalkeeper Arielle Schechtman (Del Mar, Calif. / La Jolla Country Day / UCLA) found herself one-on-one with West Virginia forward Sh'Nia Gordon. Schechtman stepped out of the net to stop Gordon's shot from hitting the back of the net, but senior Jenna Staudt (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) sprinted down the field to cover for Schechtman and tallied a team save.

With 10 minutes left in the first half, Nguyen took a corner kick and found Nally in the center of the box who then passed it back to Nguyen. Nguyen found Nally again and recorded her first assist of the season as Nally's kick soared to the top left corner of the net and she scored her first goal this season, as well as giving the Hoyas a 1-0 lead.

As the Mountaineers tried to even the score, an outstanding Georgetown defense stepped up with 24 minutes of regulation and deflected multiple shots from getting past Schechtman in the box to keep the lead.

In the 75th minute, Carusa found a loose ball in the box amongst a strong West Virginia defense and sealed the win for the Blue & Gray. This marked Carusa's third goal of the season and her second-straight game recording a goal.
