WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's soccer squad will move back into BIG EAST Conference play hosting the DePaul University Blue Demons at 3 p.m. at Shaw Field. The game will be streamed live on GUHoyas.com with alums Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser calling the action. The Hoyas are currently 4-2-1 overall and 0-1 in league play.
On Tuesday, the Blue & Gray shut out the No. 9 Duke University Blue Devils in a 1-0 victory in Durham, N.C. Junior forward
Achara (Enugu, Nigeria / Berkshire School [Mass.]) headed in a goal in the sixth minute off of a beautiful cross from junior defender
Dylan Nealis (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) to put the Hoyas on top. Georgetown dominated possession and held on for the win.
Earlier in the week, senior captain
Kyle Zajec (Westport, Conn. / Staples) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for his efforts in a 3-2 loss to Xavier in GU's BIG EAST opener on Saturday. Zajec connected on a penalty kick for the first goal of the game and also assisted on Georgetown's other goal for three points in the game. This was his first BIG EAST weekly award and the second for the Hoyas this season.
Sophomore forward
Derek Dodson (Aurora, Ill. / Waubonsie Valley) is leading the team in scoring with eight points on four goals on the year. He is followed by Zajec who has seven points for the season with two goals and a squad-high three assists.
Achara also has seven points on three goals and one assist, while senior
Ethan Lochner (New York, N.Y. / Stuyvesant) has three points on the year. In goal, freshman
Giannis Nikopolidis (Athens, Greece / Nea Genia Zirdi) has played in six games and tallied 26 saves with a 0.95 goals-against average. Nikopolidis has earned three shutouts so far this year.
DePaul is 4-4 overall and 1-0 in BIG EAST play. The squad defeated Providence, 2-1, in double overtime in the league opener, but fell to Loyola-Chicago, 1-0, on Tuesday in nonconference play. Istvan Wilhelms and Harry Hilling are tied for team league with six points apiece. Wilhelms has three goals, and Hillings has one goal with a squad-high four assists. Drew Nuelle has played every minute in goal with 25 saves and two shutouts to his credit.
Georgetown is 7-1-1 all-time against the Blue Demons and 3-1-1 at Shaw Field. The Blue & Gray has won five of the last six meetings, but the lone loss came at home in 2016 as GU fell, 1-0. Last year, the Hoyas downed the Blue Demons, 2-1, in Chicago. Dodson scored both goals for the Blue & Gray including the game winner in the 89th minute.
Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. Live stats and a watch link will be available at
