McCann Qualifies for Singlehanded Nationals

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University sailing team continued its strong season over the weekend in three different regattas, two of which were co-hosted by the Hoyas and George Washington. The sailors dominated in both divisions in the Top Nine Coed Regatta in Washington, D.C. and freshman Ford McCann (Houston, Texas / Episcopal) finished in the top two in the Carl Van Duyne, Mid-Atlantic Sailing Association (MAISA) Men's Singlehanded Championship to advance to the Laser Performance College Sailing Singlehanded Nationals in Holland, Mich., Nov. 2-4. The women also participated in the Top Nine Women's Regatta in Washington, D.C.

In Annapolis, McCann dominated the singlehanded championship for the Hoyas. Due to wind conditions, the course on Saturday, which was initially set in the mouth of the Severn River, was moved into the Chesapeake Bay during the first race. Sunday's weather brought cool and rainy skies all day with a breeze from the northeast.
 
The top five sailors qualified for singlehanded nationals, which will take place on the first weekend of November. McCann placed second in a field of 18 sailors to clinch one of the spots at the singlehanded national championship. The freshman finished with 55 points, three points behind overall winner Leo Boucher of St. Mary's College (Md.). McCann and Boucher were tied with 47 points after the 12th race, but McCann fell behind in the race after. The freshman finished 10 of the 14 races among the top five.

Top 9 Coed Regatta (Sept. 22-23; Washington, D.C.)
At the coed regatta, the Hoyas finished first out of nine teams, compiling 130 points on the weekend. 14 races were competed with both A and B Division sailing in one combined division. The race occurred over the course of two days with ideal winds on Saturday ranging between five to 12 mph and rain on Sunday.
 
In the A Division, Andy Reiter (Point Loma, Calif. / Point Loma), Claire Mohun (San Francisco, Calif. / Convent of the Sacred Heart), Haley Shea (Rye, N.Y. / Rye Country Day) and Jack Hogan (Los Angeles, Calif. / Harvard-Westlake) placed first with 60 points, finishing seven of the 14 races in the top spot. The B Division consisted of William Logue (Greenwich, Conn. / St. Georges), Caroline Teare (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands / Antilles School) and Rebecca Fung (Rye, N.Y. / Rye), who finished first in the division with 70 points and nine races among the top five.

Top 9 Regatta Women (Sept. 22-23; Washington, D.C.)
In the women's regatta, the Hoyas finished 10th in the A Division with 129 points and 11th in the B Division with 131 points. The races occurred over the course of two days with rain on Sunday and 14 races were competed with both A and B Division sailing in one combined division. The A Division fell two points behind Hobart and William Smith Colleges in the 13th and final race of the weekend and finished six of them in the top 10, including a first place finish in the fourth race.
