Volleyball Hosts Seton Hall in BIG EAST Action

WASHINGTON – Owning a five-match winning-streak and an undefeated conference record, the Georgetown University volleyball team hosts Seton Hall on the Hilltop in BIG EAST action on Wednesday. The Hoyas are 9-5 overall on the season and 2-0 in league play for the first time since 2001.

First serve is set for 5 p.m. at McDonough Arena. Live stats and video are available at www.GUHoyas.com with Monika Moore calling the play-by-play.

Georgetown opened last week with a 3-2 victory at home over St. John's. The win over the Red Storm was the first league-opening win for the Blue & Gray since 2008 and the first win over SJU since 2013. The Hoyas followed that up with another five-set victory on the road at Villanova after dropping the first two sets. Iva Vujosevic (Bar, Montenegro / Niko Rolovic) led the Hoyas with 3.80 kills per set and added 3.20 digs per set. She posted double-double against both the Johnnies and the Wildcats. Vujosevic was also named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for her efforts. Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill. / Oak Park-River Forest) added 2.80 kills per set and 1.60 blocks per set while posting a double-double against St. John's in kills and blocks. Kenzie Higareda (Woodbridge, Va. / Forest Park) led the Blue & Gray with 3.60 digs per set while Margo Pivonka (Broadview Heights, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit) paced the offence with 9.10 assists per set.

On the season, three different Hoyas average at least three kills per set, led by Vujosevic with 3.73 kps while Speech and Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas / Dawson) add 3.15 and 3.06 kps, respectively. Pivonka paces the offense with 9.11 assists per set.

Defensively, Higareda anchors the back row with 4.56 digs per set. Vujosevic and Jessica Cusi (Pacifica, Calif. / Lick-Wilmerding) add 2.68 and 2.69 dps, respectively, while Sinnette is just shy of two digs a frame with 1.92 dps.

At the net, Speech has been credited with 51 blocks on the season for a 1.06 average and Brennan Wilhite (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. / Cathedral Catholic) adds 0.53 bps.

Seton Hall (5-11, 0-3 BIG EAST) dropped all three of its league contests last week, falling to Villanova, Butler and Xavier. Abby Thelan leads the Pirates with 3.66 kps while Caitlin Koska adds 3.14 kills a frame. The offense runs through Sophia Coffey and Maggie Cvelbar, averaging 5.71 and 5.13 assists per set, respectively.

Defensively, Eden Dolezal averages 3.72 digs per set with Mira Higgenbotham chipping in an even three digs a set. At the net, SHU's top threat is Haylee Gasser with 0.81 blocks per set, followed by Amanda Rachwal with 0.79 bps and Emilee Turner with 0.58 bps.

Wednesday's match will be the 50th showdown between the Hoyas and Seton Hall, dating back to 1982. Georgetown owns a 32-17 overall record in the series but has only won one match in the last nine meetings. The last GU win came in a 3-2 victory at Seton Hall in 2015.

Following Wednesday's match, Georgetown hits the road once again for a pair of weekend BIG EAST showdowns. The Hoyas face No. 20 Marquette on Friday, September 28 at 8 p.m. EST before taking on DePaul in Chicago on Saturday, September 29 at 7 p.m. EST.
