Hoyas Sweep Seton Hall for Sixth-Straight Win

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's volleyball team won its sixth-straight match and remained undefeated in BIG EAST play with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-18) sweep over visiting Seton Hall in league action on Wednesday evening. The Hoyas improve to 10-5 overall while their 3-0 mark ties the best BIG EAST start since 2001.

Three Hoyas posted double-digit kills with Iva Vujosevic (Bar, Montenegro / Niko Rolovic) and Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill. / Oak Park-River Forest) leading the way with 13 each. Speech hit an eye-popping .765 in the match on 17 swings without an attack error while Vujosevic hit at a stellar .455 clip from the outside. Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas / Dawson) joined the duo in double-figure kills with 11.

Georgetown hit .419 as a team in the match with all three sets over .300, including a fantastic .600 mark in the second set. Every Hoya that played recorded a kill in the contest with the exception of the libero and back row defensive specialist.

Margo Pivonka (Broadview Heights, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit) paced the offense with 30 assists while Jessica Cusi (Pacifica, Calif. / Lick-Wilmerding) added nine.

Defensively, Kenzie Higareda (Woodbridge, Va. / Forest Park) led all players with 14 digs while Vujosevic chipped in seven. Speech led the Hoyas with three blocks in the match while Margo Snipe (Washington, D.C. / Ridgewood [N.J.]) and Lara Adekunle (Naperville, Ill. / Metea Valley) both chipped in a pair.

A closely contested start to the match turned to Georgetown's favor mid-set with a 15-11 advantage. The Pirates (5-12, 0-4 BIG EAST) would respond, posting a 5-1 run to take a 17-16 lead and force a GU timeout. Coming out of the huddle, the Blue & Gray rallied off four-straight points behind a strong serving rotation from Elissa Barbosa (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) to retake the lead, 20-17. Following consecutive points from SHU to make it a one-point frame, the Hoyas closed out the stanza on a 5-2 run to win the set, 25-21.

Georgetown dominated the second set from the start, taking an early 9-3 lead before utilizing a 7-3 outburst to go ahead 16-7. The Blue & Gray hit the homestretch up 20-11 and never looked back en route to the 25-16 set victory. Hitting .600 in the frame, GU blasted 19 kills on 30 attempts with just a lone attack error. Seven different Hoyas recorded kills in the stanza, led by Speech with six.

The third set proved to be the most competitive, seeing nine ties and seven lead changes throughout. Neither squad could create any breathing room early before seeing things knotted up at 11-11. Georgetown then used an 8-1 run to lead 19-12 and held the Pirates at bay to win the frame, 25-18, and the match in a sweep. Vujosevic notched six kills in the frame to go with a pair of service aces while all three of Speech's rejections came in the third set.

Abby Thelan led Seton Hall with 14 kills while Elizabeth Sottung had 11 digs.

Up next, Georgetown hits the road once again for a pair of weekend BIG EAST showdowns. The Hoyas face No. 20 Marquette on Friday, September 28 at 8 p.m. EST before taking on DePaul in Chicago on Saturday, September 29 at 7 p.m. EST.
