WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's volleyball team hits the road for a midweek showdown at VCU on Tuesday night in Richmond. The Hoyas are coming off a second-place finish at the Georgetown Classic over the weekend, going 2-2 in the event.

The Hoyas (4-4) went 2-2 at the Georgetown Classic over the weekend to tie for second place, defeating Norfolk State 3-0 and George Mason 3-1. Both of GU's losses were in five sets, to Penn and UNCW.
Kenzie Higareda (Woodbridge, Va. / Forest Park) set the Georgetown program record for career digs (now at 1,632) while
Iva Vujosevic (Bar, Montenegro / Niko Rolovic / UMES) tallied a career-high 28 kills against UNCW. Vujosevic averaged 4.50 kills per set over the weekend while
Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill. / Oak Park-River Forest) chipped in 3.12 kps.
Alyssa Sinnette (Pearland, Texas / Dawson),
Olivia King (Ardmore, Pa. / Lower Merion) and
Elissa Barbosa (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) all averaged at least two kills a frame as well. Defensively,
Jessica Cusi (Pacifica, Calif. / Lick-Wilmerding), Higareda and Vujosevic all averaged at least three digs a stanza.
Both Higareda and Vujosevic were named the All-Tournament Team for their performances
On the season, three different Hoyas average over three kills a frame. Vujosevic leads the way with 3.71 kills per set, followed by Sinnette and Speech with 3.332 and 3.17 kps, respectively.
Margo Pivonka (Broadview Heights, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit) paces the offence with 8.39 assists per set while Cusi adds 1.85 aps, splitting time between duties as a defensive specialist and a 6-2 setter.
Defensively, Higareda averages 4.48 digs per set while Cusi, Vujosevic and Sinnette all chip in more than two digs a frame. At the net, Speech has tallied 25 total blocks in 24 sets this season for a 1.04 average.
VCU (1-5) is coming off a 1-2 weekend at the Seton Hall Classic. The Rams lost to the host Pirates, 3-2, before earning their first win of the season, 3-1, against Oklahoma. Wrapping up the weekend, VCU was swept by No. 14 Pittsburgh.
Vicky Giommarini leads the Rams with 2.55 kills per set while five other VCU players chip in more than one kill a frame. Dajah Ard and Tyler Sroufe run the 6-2 offense, averaging 5.44 and 2.40 assists per set, respectively. Defensively, Madalon Simpson averages an even 3.00 digs per set while Jasmin Sneed is solid at the net with 1.56 blocks a stanza.
Tuesday's match is the 20th showdown between Georgetown and VCU in program history. The Hoyas own a 13-6 overall record in the series, dating back to 1977. VCU won the last meeting, 3-1, in Richmond in 2012 while the Hoyas won the previous two matches, 3-0 on the Hilltop in 2011 and 3-2 at VCU in 2010.
Georgetown has the weekend off following Tuesday's match and will return to action on Sept. 14 and 15 as it co-hosts the Georgetown/George Washington Tournament. The Hoyas host Memphis at McDonough Arena on Friday, Sept. 14 before welcoming Alabama A&M and Hampton to the Nation's Capital on Saturday, Sept. 15.
