Georgetown Hosts No. 15/13 Marquette on Tuesday

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team (12-5, 2-2 BIG EAST) continues its three-game homestand as it hosts No. 15/13 Marquette (14-3, 3-1 BIG EAST) at Capital One Arena on Tuesday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. and a link to live stats is available at GUHoyas.com.

The game can be seen live on FS1 with Jeff Levering calling the play-by-play and Stephen Bardo serving as the analyst. The game can be heard locally on The Team 980 radio station with Rich Chvotkin in his 45th season on the call.

The Hoyas are coming off a thrilling 96-90 double-overtime victory over visiting Providence on Saturday. Senior Jessie Govan (Queens Village, N.Y. / Wings Academy) led the Blue & Gray with a career-high 33 points to go with 14 rebounds and four blocked shots. His double-double was the sixth this campaign and leads the BIG EAST. Freshman James Akinjo (Oakland, Calif. / Salesian College Preparatory) added 20 points, including a game-tying 3-pointer with 10 seconds remaining in overtime, along with a career-high nine assists. Fellow freshman Mac McClung (Gate City, Va. / Gate City) added 16 points and nailed a buzzer-beating three to send the game into overtime.

For their efforts, Akinjo was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the second time this season and Govan collected his sixth BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll nod.

Govan continues to pace the Georgetown offense with an even 20.0 points per game while Akinjo and McClung both average double figures with 14.5 and 12.6 ppg, respectively. Freshman Josh LeBlanc (Baton Rouge, La. / Madison Prep Academy) is just off the double-figure mark with 9.4 ppg but leads the Blue & Gray in rebounding with 8.2 boards a contest.

Through four conference games, Georgetown has the second-highest scoring offense (83.5) in the league and leads the conference in assists (17.8). The Hoyas are also tops in rebounding (41.1) and second in blocks (4.4).

Marquette is coming off a 70-66 BIG EAST victory against Seton Hall at home, its third-straight league win following a loss to St. John's in the conference opener. Markus Howard, the reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week, leads the Golden Eagles with 25.8 ppg while Sam Hauser and Joey Hauser add 13.4 and 10.4 ppg, respectively. Sam Hauser is MU's top rebounder with 6.8 rpg and Howard averages 4.4 assists per game to run the offense.

Tuesday's game marks the 26th overall meeting against Marquette, with the Golden Eagles currently holding the narrow 13-12 series lead. Marquette defeated the Hoyas 90-86 in overtime in last year's battle at Capital One Arena. Govan led Georgetown with 25 points and nine rebounds in the game.

Following Saturday's game, the Hoyas will return to action on Monday, Jan. 21 as they welcome Creighton to Capital One Arena. Tipoff is slated for 8:30 p.m.
