WASHINGTON – The No. 10 Georgetown women's soccer played the Creighton Bluejays to a 2-2 tie on Sunday afternoon at Shaw Field. The Hoyas allowed two goals from Creighton in the first half and answered in the second half with a pair of goals from freshmen
Julia Leas and
Sofie Fox. Both teams looked for the game-winning goal in double overtime, but neither squad could find it. With the tie, the Blue & Gray stands at 10-2-2 overall and 4-0-1 in the BIG EAST while the Bluejays become 7-5-2 on the season and 1-2-2 in the league.
COACH NOLAN ON THE MATCH
Even though we were down 2-0 at the half, I didn't think we played that badly. Both of Creighton's goals were SportsCenter-type goals with great finishes. We changed our system going into the second half. We wanted to put a little more pressure on them up top and I felt that helped. We probably went a little bit more direct because I think we had the athleticism to give their back four some problems. I think that ultimately helped us get back into the game and set the tone of the second half. We had a great goal from Leas off of the corner kick and good build up play against the ball in the box when Fox calmly made it 2-2. Then at that point, I felt we were the team that was more likely to win it. We had plenty of half opportunities and they had a couple of counter attacks, which they're always going to have. I'm disappointed with the result, but not really disappointed with how we played because I think we actually played decently. This was a much better effort than our effort against Xavier the other day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Creighton started the scoring in the 18th minute when Ashleigh Cearlock sent the ball soaring from the top of the box into the left corner of the net.
- Senior Sarah Trissel had a good chance to make it even in the 28th minute but CU's goalkeeper Keelan Terrell managed the save.
- The Bluejays were able to take a 2-0 lead just before the end of the first half. Creighton's Ansley Atkinson scored the second goal off of a free kick after being fouled by the Hoyas.
- The Blue & Gray made it a one-goal difference in the 64th minute. Freshman Julia Leas got a head on sophomore Boo Jackson's corner kick to make it 2-1.
- The Hoyas made it even at two in the 73rd minute. Freshman Sophie Fox scored the equalizer off of a double assist. Graduate student Amanda Carolan crossed it over to find senior Paula Germino-Watnick inside the box, whose shot was denied by a Creighton defender and was pushed back to Fox to send it to the back of the net.
- Senior Carson Nizialek had a chance to score the game winner in overtime, but her shot just missed the inside of the net.
- Senior defender Meaghan Nally found herself one-on-one against CU's Skylar Heinrich, who was looking to score the golden goal, but freshman keeper Anna Leat used her body to block Heinrich's chance.
OF NOTE
- Germino-Watnick's assist put her on the all-time list at Georgetown with 16 career assists at the No. 10 spot.
- Fox's goal was the first of her career.
- The Hoyas outshot the Bluejays 22-11 and had a dominant second half performance, taking 13 shots to CU's two.
- Georgetown also had the edge on corner kicks, taking 13 to Creighton's three.
- While both keepers allowed two goals each, Leat tallied five saves and Terrell made seven.
