No. 7 Hoyas Meet No. 4 St. John’s in BIG EAST Showdown

WASHINGTON – The No. 7 Georgetown University men's soccer team will face the No. 4 St. John's University Red Storm on Wednesday in a BIG EAST Conference showdown at Belson Stadium at 7 p.m. The Hoyas are currently 11-1-1 on the season and 4-0-1 in league play, while the Red Storm sit at 12-1 for the year with a perfect BIG EAST mark of 5-0.

  • The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network with Drew Casey, John Fanta and Meghan Caffrey calling the action.  There will be a live pre-show beginning at 6:15 p.m. to preview the huge matchup for the squads.

About the Hoyas
  • Georgetown is coming off of a 1-0 victory over Xavier on Saturday at Shaw Field.  Junior midfielder Jacob Montes scored the game winner and sophomore goalkeeper Giannis Nikopolidis notched his third shutout of the 2019 season.
  • Two players earned weekly honors on Monday following the 2-0 week with wins over Xavier and then-No. 25 Maryland.  Senior defender Dylan Nealis earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, while Nikopolidis was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. 
  • Saturday was Georgetown's fifth-straight shutout and the eighth of the season.
  • The Hoyas' record of 11-1-1 is the best start for the program over 13 games in history.
  • Georgetown ranked second in the most recent RPI and seventh when the United Soccer Coaches poll came out on Tuesday.
  • Derek Dodson leads the team in scoring with 13 points on four goals and five assists.  He is followed by Montes with a team-high six goals for 12 points.
  • Paul Rothrock is third with a goal and a squad-high seven assists for nine points, while sophomore Zach Riviere also sits at third on the team with four goals and one assist.
 
About the Red Storm
  • St. John's defeated Creighton 2-0 last weekend to stay perfect in league play.
  • The Red Storm are currently No. 1 in the most recent RPI with the Hoyas sitting at No. 2.
  • SJU has a five-match shutout streak going to match the Blue & Gray, the team has nine for the season.
  • Tani Oluwaseyi is leading the Red Storm and the league in goals with eight on the campaign, this includes five game winners. 
 
Series with St. John's
  • Georgetown is 9-23-3 all-time against the Red Storm with a mark of 3-11-2 on the road.
  • Last year the Hoyas fell by a score of 1-0 as St. John's tallied a goal in the 44th minute.
  • The last meeting in New York was a 1-0 Hoya loss during the 2017 season.
