Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Second Half Goals Put No. 14 Hoyas Ahead of Seton Hall

WASHINGTON – After a scoreless first half, the No. 14 Georgetown University women's soccer team opened the flood gates in the second half to come out on top 4-0 against the Seton Hall Pirates at Shaw Field. The Hoyas blanked the Pirates on GU's Senior Day on Sunday afternoon and didn't allow SHU to take a single shot on the day. With the win, Georgetown advances to 11-3-3 overall and 5-1-2 in the BIG EAST while the Pirates fall to 1-13-1 on the year and 0-8-0 in the league.

COACH NOLAN ON THE MATCH

We're in a position where we need to get results. We wanted to get out on Seton Hall early and score an early goal, but more importantly, we needed to just impose ourselves on the game. Although we didn't get that early goal, I felt like we did a good job of imposing on them. It was just a matter of time until we scored. We had wonderful chances in the first half. Jenna [Royson] scored in the 66th minute and then all of a sudden, the team relaxed and we started to show more composure. I do think we should have played a little bit better though. The chances we had, I thought we could have finished a few more. It's going to need to be better against St. John's on Thursday, which is a pretty good team, has a very special player and is excellently coached.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Blue & Gray had plenty of opportunities to score between both halves, but could not meet its target until halfway through the second.
  • Sophomore Jenna Royson put the Hoyas on the board in the 67th minute. Graduate student Amanda Carolan found Royson on the left side to blast her shot past Seton Hall goalkeeper Harpa Johannsdottir and make it 1-0.
  • Carolan kept GU's rhythm going just two minutes later by scoring her own goal. She headed it into back of net after connecting with junior Jenna Menta on the right side.
  • Menta then recorded her own goal in the 80th minute. Senior Carson Nizialek laid the ball ahead of Menta in the middle of the box, who then dribbled it right up to Johannsdottir and was able to get it past her to make it 3-0.
  • Sophomore Caitlin Moon capped the scoring for the Hoyas in the 84th minute. Fellow sophomore Maya Fernandez-Powell connected with Moon as she drove it right up to knock it into the back of the net.

OF NOTE
  • With Carolan's goal on the day, she tied her single season record from 2016 with 10 goals. She sits at No. 9 on the list twice with most goals in a single season.
  • Carolan also moved up to No. 4 on the all-time list with 81 career points.
  • The Hoyas took 22 shots on the day, including 15 in the second half, and didn't allow Seton Hall to take a single shot.
  • Georgetown also edged the Pirates in corner kicks, taking seven total to their two.
  • Junior keeper Alyssa Navarrete was credit with the clean sheet today and didn't have to make any saves at goal while Johannsdottir made five.
